Mission: Board Games is an independent tabletop game store opened in early December 2016 by Mason Hans, then 22, in a Johnson Drive storefront in downtown Mission, Kansas. It runs two KC-metro stores — the original at 5606A Johnson Drive, Mission, KS 66202 and KC North at 7751 NW Prairie View Rd, Kansas City, MO 64151 — under the legal entity Gaming Enterprises LLC. Both stores pair retail (board games, trading card games, RPGs, miniatures) with open play tables, a house library of games customers may play in-store, and a seven-nights-a-week event calendar. The Mission store adjoins Urban Prairie Coffee, the coffee shop Mason’s parents opened next door in 2018.

Description

Mission: Board Games is a game shop that sells games and also expects you to play them on the premises. From the first weeks it carried “500 board games and game accessories,” from children’s titles through Monopoly and Risk to the modern hobby catalogue, and it set aside floor space for people to sit down with them.1 A February 2017 visit found “four empty game tables and only one man — the owner,” with “a shelf full of open games ready to be played by customers visiting during store hours.”2 That structure — retail wall, open library, tables, calendar — is still what the business runs on nine years later.

The store operates under the line “Creating Connections Through Table Top Gaming” on its website and “Cultivating connection through tabletop gaming” on its Facebook page, and the stated commercial goal is “bring back family game night.”345

There are two stores. The original is at 5606A Johnson Drive in downtown Mission, Kansas, on the Johnson Drive retail strip. The second, KC North, is at 7751 NW Prairie View Rd in the Kansas City Northland, south of Zona Rosa. Each keeps its own hours, its own phone line, and its own event calendar; the two share an email address, an online store, and an owner.6789

Retail spans board games, trading card games, RPGs, miniatures, and supplies, sold in-store and through two web channels — a Shopify storefront and a TCGplayer Pro storefront for singles — with store pickup offered.31011 A Mission: Loyalty program returns store credit on purchases, and a gift registry and private-event booking form round out the first-party offerings.1213 The private-events page is the clearest first-party statement of the play model: “We have a library of games for you to choose from or you can bring your own. We also offer food and beverage options.”13 A first-party video description also refers to “our rental games list,” inviting customers to “come by the shop to check one out.”14

The event calendar is the store’s clock, and it is dense. As published for September 2026, the Mission store runs Pokémon League Trade & Battle on Sundays (1–4 p.m.), a Gundam TCG weekly tournament and Monday Night Magic on Mondays (both 6:30–10 p.m.), Star Wars Unlimited (6–9 p.m.) and a Pokémon Gym Leader Challenge (7–11 p.m.) on Tuesdays, Community Board Game Night (6–10 p.m.) and a casual Lorcana league (6–9 p.m.) on Wednesdays, RPG Night on Thursdays (6–10 p.m.), Friday Night Magic (5–10 p.m.), and a One Piece TCG weekly tournament on Saturdays (5–8 p.m.).8 KC North runs a different week: One Piece TCG on Sundays (1–4 p.m.), a biñho league and Community Board Game Night on Mondays, RPG Night on Tuesdays, a Miniatures Meetup on Wednesdays, Star Wars Unlimited Weekly and a Digimon tournament on Thursdays, Friday Night Magic (5–10 p.m.), and Pokémon League Battle & Trade plus a Gundam TCG tournament on Saturdays.9 KC North is a listed Wizards Play Network store and a listed Star Wars: Unlimited store.15

That schedule has rotated over the years. Visit KC’s guide to metro board-game shops recorded an earlier version — “Board Game Wednesdays, Star Wars Saturdays and (of course) Pokémon Sundays” — and the same era’s press has Hans hosting Star Wars Destiny open plays on Saturdays and Pokémon on Sundays.1617 Board-game Wednesdays and Pokémon survive in the current Mission calendar; Star Wars has moved to Tuesday and changed games.8

The Mission store is not a café itself, but it shares a wall with one: Urban Prairie Coffee at 5606B Johnson Drive, opened in September 2018 by Mason’s parents Julie and Jason Hans, who “decided to connect the two stores so that people could drink their daily coffee over a game of Monopoly.”18

This page is not Level One Game Shop at the City Market, TableTop Game and Hobby in Overland Park, Game Café in Independence, or Pawn & Pint — the other metro tabletop operations that appear alongside Mission: Board Games in local guides and in The Pitch’s Best of KC balloting.191620

Ownership and history

Mason Hans founded the store and remains its owner. He is a native of Fairway, Kansas, a 2012 graduate of Bishop Miege High School, and was born in 1994 — he was 22 when the store opened.117 The Johnson County Post covered the opening on 12 December 2016 with Hans already installed as owner; the Shawnee Mission East student paper reviewed the store that February and reported it “opened in early December.”12

Hans’s own account of the decision is on the record twice. To The Pitch, in February 2017: “Someone told me the best way to make a million dollars with a board-game store is not to open a board-game store. But gaming — and community — is my passion. It gets people off their phones or computers for a while, and there’s a game for everyone.”17 To the Johnson County Post: “I felt this are[a] could use a board game store, a place where people could come together and play games.”1 The origin he cites is Pokémon in Fairway, where the nearest place to meet other players was more than 30 minutes away — “I wish this place had been here then.”17

The business is family-run without being a family partnership. Hans opened it “with the help of his parents,” Jason and Julie Hans, whom he publicly thanked at the opening.118 Two years later, when the neighbouring coffee shop came up for sale, his parents bought it and opened Urban Prairie Coffee in September 2018, connecting the two storefronts.18 Siblings Abby, Ella, and Mitchell Hans have worked shifts across both businesses; Julie hires and trains staff, Jason handles “the business and legal side of things for both stores,” and Mason’s job is “getting to know the regulars and advertising uncommon games.”18 Hans’s summary: “We all have our own little roles and it definitely takes a village. I get a lot of help from family and friends and customers.”18

The Northland store. The exact opening date was not located this pass, but the first-party site brackets it tightly. A 10 December 2020 capture of missionboardgames.com lists one location, Mission.21 A 28 December 2021 capture lists two, the second headed “Zona Rosa (Now Open!)” at 8512 NW Prairie View Rd, Kansas City, MO 64153, with holiday hours of Mon–Fri 12–7, Sat 12–6, and Sun 12–6.22 By the 9 March 2022 capture the second location has become “KC NORTH” at 7751 NW Prairie View Rd, Kansas City, MO 64151 — a different street number and ZIP — with hours of Mon–Fri 11–8, Sat 10–6, Sun 10–6.23 So the Northland store opened in 2021 under the Zona Rosa name, moved within the same road corridor, and was renamed KC North sometime between late December 2021 and early March 2022. Both the move date and the reason are unrecorded here.

The second store is an expansion by the same owner, not a franchise or an acquisition: both are published under one website, one email address, one Shopify store, and the single legal entity Gaming Enterprises LLC.610

Recognition. Mission: Board Games won Best Table Top Game Store in The Pitch’s Best of KC 2021, ahead of TableTop Game and Hobby (runner-up) with Game Café and Level One Game Shop as the other finalists.19 The store announced a second such win on 22 November 2025: “Mission Board Games has been named The Pitch’s 2025 Best Tabletop Game Store in KC.”24

Registration state and filing date for Gaming Enterprises LLC (Kansas or Missouri Secretary of State) were not established this pass — both state business-search portals declined automated queries.
