Moti Mahal II is the Westport room of Jorabar “Jay” Shokar’s two-location Indian restaurant, at 4113 Pennsylvania Ave a half-block off Westport Road. The space has served North Indian food under Shokar’s partnership for well over a decade: it opened as the Westport Korma Sutra, and by December 2016 had been renamed Moti Mahal with — as one regular put it — “the same menu, staff and cook.” The website still labels it “Formerly Korma Sutra.” It keeps longer hours than the Northland original, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and shares its family-dinner-heavy menu.
Description
Moti Mahal II is a storefront on the east side of Pennsylvania Avenue in the Westport entertainment district; the Westport merchants’ association lists it among district businesses with the owner’s own description, “An Authentic Indian Restaurant serving two locations in Kansas City.”12 Unlike the Northland room, which closes between lunch and dinner, Westport runs straight through from 10 in the morning to 10 at night, six days a week — the earliest opening of any Indian restaurant in this Registry, and one Tripadvisor reviewer praised its “great brunch.”234
The ordering menu carries the same headings as Barry Road — appetizers, vegetarian and non-vegetarian family dinners, vegetarian specialties, seafood, tandoori, chicken, beef, gosht (lamb), biryani, goat specialties, naan, relishes, desserts and drinks.3 For the itemized menu, see moti-mahal-barry-road; prices at this location were not independently captured.5
Ownership and history
The room’s history is the history of Kansas City’s Korma Sutra family. In 2013, when Jorabar “Jay” Shokar opened the first Moti Mahal on NW Prairie View Road, The Pitch identified him as “a partner in the Westport location of Korma Sutra” and wrote that “the food at both locations of Korma Sutra is very good.”67 When the Westport Korma Sutra opened, and who Shokar’s partners were, is not documented; the Korma Sutra brand’s remaining room is Korma Sutra in Lenexa, owned by Baljit Singh.
By December 2016 the Pennsylvania Avenue restaurant had taken the Moti Mahal name: a Denver reviewer who called it his favorite Indian restaurant in Kansas City wrote, “Just a name change. Korma Sutra is now Moti Mahal … it’s the same menu, staff and cook.”4 The official site numbers the rooms — Moti Mahal I on Barry Road, Moti Mahal II here — and still parenthesizes “Formerly Korma Sutra” after the Westport address, with the same personal e-mail address published for both.2
