Korma Sutra is a full-service North Indian restaurant in the Quivira Crossing shops at 87th Street Parkway and Quivira in Lenexa, the surviving location of a small Kansas City Indian-restaurant family that once also had rooms in Overland Park, Westport and Liberty. Owner Baljit Singh works the floor himself — readers of the Johnson County Post know him for handing out balloons — and the restaurant sends every table off with complimentary chai and mango lassi. It won Best Indian in the Post’s Best of Johnson County 2024 and was on KCUR listeners’ 2025 list of the metro’s best South Asian restaurants. The lunch buffet ended in the pandemic and, by the owner’s account, is not coming back.

Description

Korma Sutra occupies a strip-center storefront in the Quivira Crossing shops on 87th Street Parkway, a few doors from the Quivira Road intersection.1 The name is a pun on the Kama Sutra; the tagline on the door and the website is “Cuisine of India.”2 The website is explicit that the room used to be a different Indian restaurant — “Korma Sutra (Formerly Flavor of India)” — and lists only this address, with no other locations.2

The menu is the long, familiar North Indian card: mulligatawny and coconut soups, samosas, pakoras and a “Korma Sutra Platter” of mixed fritters; twelve vegetarian specialties from mutter paneer to a house “Korma Sutra Korma” of mixed vegetables with cashews and raisins; fish and shrimp in makhani, vindaloo, saag and korma preparations; tandoori chicken, seekh kabob and a mixed grill; and chicken, lamb, goat and beef curries. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian family dinners for two, three or four people bundle soup, starters, several curries, rice, naan and gulab jamun or kheer.3 The Johnson County Post’s readers singled out the hospitality as much as the food: “Their owner is always on the floor, and is so friendly and makes it a fun experience for everyone,” one wrote, and several mentioned that he hands out free balloons; the meal ends with complimentary chai and mango lassi.1

The lunch buffet that most metro Indian restaurants relied on before 2020 is gone here for good. Reporting on the buffet question in April 2021, The Pitch found Korma Sutra in Lenexa “buffet-less for months, even though Johnson County guidelines allow buffets to operate as normal,” and quoted Baljit Singh: “One thousand percent. No more buffet.” He cited food allergies and, above all, “a lot of food waste, every day,” and said he had not taken much of a financial hit — some families were getting carryout three times a week, and he tucks extra food and free ice cream for children into their bags instead.4 The website still carries the notice “Currently, No Lunch Buffet.”2

Ownership and history

Baljit Singh is the owner and the public face of the restaurant.41 Korma Sutra was for years a small family of restaurants rather than a single room. The Pitch’s Charles Ferruzza wrote in 2013 of “the local Korma Sutra restaurants” and identified Jorabar “Jay” Shokar — who was then opening Moti Mahal in the Northland — as “a partner in the Westport location of Korma Sutra,” adding that “the food at both locations of Korma Sutra is very good.”56 That Westport room, at 4113 Pennsylvania Ave, was renamed Moti Mahal by December 2016 (“Just a name change. Korma Sutra is now Moti Mahal … same menu, staff and cook”) and operates today as Moti Mahal II, whose own website still labels it “Formerly Korma Sutra.”78

The original Overland Park Korma Sutra — the one this Registry’s assignment listed at 14521 Metcalf Ave — no longer exists: by May 2022 that address housed Shagan’s, a different North Indian restaurant, and Foursquare lists the Metcalf-area Korma Sutra as closed.19 A Liberty, Missouri location at 917 W Liberty Dr is likewise listed as closed on Yelp.10 The Overland Park opening year, the chef lineage, and when the Lenexa room converted from Flavor of India are all unsourced; a 2015 food-blog post that covered this history was hosted on Typepad, which has since shut down.
