Naree Kitchen Thai & Sushi is a strip-mall restaurant on State Avenue near 80th Terrace in western Kansas City, Kansas, that does three things under one roof: Thai cooking with a Lao accent (papaya salad four ways, larb, tom yum noodles, a crispy baby-back rib), a full sushi bar with a long list of “Bobby Signature Rolls,” and a short pho menu. It has been open since at least 2019, closes on Mondays, and is the kind of place regulars describe as “hiding in plain sight” — a full parking lot of carryout customers on a weeknight.

Description

Naree Kitchen sits in a suite of a strip center on the south side of State Avenue at about 80th Terrace, a block or so from Delaware Park, with free lot parking.1 The site’s own pitch is plain — “outstanding Thai and Sushi cuisine … sushi rolls, nigiri, and sashimi … fried rice and noodles” — and the room, per a 2022 local blog, is brightly colored and small enough that it was “packed” with carryout traffic during the pandemic years.123

The menu runs to more than 150 items across sixteen sections, and its Thai half is more specific than most in the metro. Papaya salad comes Thai style, Thai-crab, Thai-Lao style and Lao style (the last two with pickled crab and “creamy fish sauce”), served with sticky rice; larb comes in chicken, beef or pork; and a “yum beef” salad uses thin-sliced medium-rare beef.4 The noodle-soup list pairs beef, chicken, meatball, combo and seafood pho with a Thai noodle soup of tendon and tripe, wonton noodle soup with red-pork barbecue, and tom yum noodles.4 House specialties are a spicy-basil “Treasure of the Sea,” crispy fried baby-back ribs with garlic, and a grilled pork chop with Thai dipping sauce; curries (green, massaman, pineapple, yellow, panang) and stir-fries round it out, alongside the Chinese-American standards — General Tao’s, honey sesame, orange — that a KCK strip-mall audience expects.4

The sushi side is a full program: standard rolls from $4.50, nigiri and sashimi by the piece, chef’s-selection platters, and twenty-five “Bobby Signature Rolls” — an Ahi roll, black and red dragons, a filet-mignon “Cowboy,” a seared-scallop “Tarzan,” a fried lobster roll, and a house “Naree Roll” of salmon, mozzarella, cream cheese and jalapeño, flash-fried.4 Tripadvisor reviewers single out the sushi (“fresh and delicious with some uncommon combinations”) and spring rolls “2–3 times the size of any I’ve ever seen.”3 Our Changing Lives, a Kansas City travel blog, made it “our KCK stop for sushi and fried rice,” praising the crab rangoon, chicken satay and a chicken fried rice that was “more than we could finish.”2

Ownership and history

The owner is not named in any source found. “Naree” is a Thai given name, the tourism listings’ contact address is registered to “nareerat,” and the sushi menu’s signature section carries the name “Bobby” — the natural reading is a Thai owner-cook named Naree or Nareerat and a sushi chef called Bobby, but neither is confirmed. A business-data aggregator lists the operation at 1–10 employees under $5 million in revenue, and a search snippet refers to a “Naree Cuisine LLC” as the entity — both unverified.5

The opening date is likewise undocumented. Tripadvisor’s earliest review is dated September 2019 (“Best little place in WYCO”); Our Changing Lives wrote in February 2022 that they had been ordering carryout “for the past year” under COVID restrictions and that the dining room had just reopened.32 The restaurant’s Facebook page and its Menufy site both predate 2020.
