OverBoard Coffee is a locally owned and operated coffee shop in the Lakewood area of northeast Lee’s Summit, Missouri, opened in 2023 by lifelong Kansas City–area resident Jennifer Gamble. Billed as the first dine-in coffee shop in northeast Lee’s Summit, it pours coffee from Kansas City roaster Messenger and is known locally for its fresh-baked cinnamon rolls.

Description

OverBoard Coffee is an independent, locally owned coffee shop in the Lakewood area of northeast Lee’s Summit, near the intersection of MO-470 and NE Lakewood Blvd. The shop serves hot and cold coffee and espresso drinks alongside fresh-baked pastries — including cinnamon rolls, muffins, danishes, turnovers and bagels — and breakfast sandwiches. Its coffee comes from Messenger, a Kansas City roaster (see messenger-coffee-co). The business positions itself as a neighborhood “third place” for the Lakewood, Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, Independence and broader Kansas City metro communities, and bills itself as the first dine-in coffee shop in northeast Lee’s Summit. The name drives a nautical brand voice (“Cups Ahoy!”, “a little extra” / going “overboard” on service).

Ownership and history

OverBoard Coffee was founded by Jennifer Gamble, who is described on the business’s own site as “The Captain of Coffee.” Gamble is a lifelong Kansas City–area resident: she grew up north of the river and relocated to Lee’s Summit in 1993. She graduated from Missouri State University and worked for advertising agencies and Starlight Theatre before launching an event-planning company that produced more than 500 events across 60+ cities. When she recognized the lack of a dedicated coffee shop in the Lakewood area, she opened OverBoard Coffee, with a business start date of June 20, 2023 per the Better Business Bureau.1 The shop quickly built a local following, reportedly selling close to 1,000 cinnamon rolls in its first six months.
