Pine & Bamboo Garden is a family-owned Chinese restaurant that spent more than four decades at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Nieman Road in Shawnee before relocating, in the fall of 2025, to the Quivira Crossing shops at 87th Street Parkway and Quivira in Lenexa. Its menu is the full American-Chinese canon — Hunan, Szechwan and Cantonese, plus pad thai — with a separate “Authentic Chinese” section, weekend dim sum, boba tea and a full bar. Johnson County Post readers voted it the best Chinese food in the county in 2022, and the restaurant’s own feeds in 2026 describe “more than 43 years” of service.

Description

Pine & Bamboo Garden’s self-description has been stable for years: “a taste of China,” offering “Hunan, Szechwan, and Cantonese cuisine at its finest” — “Cho Cho Beef, Moo Shu Pork, Shrimp with Broccoli, Phad Thai Chicken, and more!”1 The current site still carries the old line that the restaurant is “located west of I-35 at the corner of 63rd Street and Nieman Rd,” a leftover from the Shawnee years that the Lenexa address on the same page contradicts.1

The menu is large and numbered. An American-Chinese core — lo mein, fried rice, sizzling rice, sweet-and-sour, General Tao’s, sesame and orange chicken, Mongolian beef, honey walnut shrimp, moo shu with pancakes — is joined by Singapore- and Indonesian-style curries, “sa cha” and “New Ze” preparations, a jalapeño beef, pan-fried noodles, Atkins and Weight Watchers sections, and a separate Authentic Chinese menu that opens with fried pork intestine and continues through seafood, vegetables, and pork, beef and duck dishes.2 Reviewers consistently single out the hot-and-sour soup, pan-fried dumplings and egg rolls; a 2018 Tripadvisor reviewer describes cart-service dim sum, and a 2026 Nextdoor recommendation says dim sum is served on Sundays.34 The restaurant’s own promotional videos in 2026 lead with the pan-fried dumplings.5

Lunch combinations, served daily 11 to 3 with egg drop soup, pork fried rice and an egg roll or crab rangoon, run $13.95 to $18.95; dinner entrées are $16.95 to $22.95.2 The dining room closes between lunch and dinner, but carryout and delivery run straight through to 8:40 p.m.2 Corporate catering is offered by phone.1

Ownership and history

Pine & Bamboo Garden is a family business; the owning family “has lived in Shawnee a long time and believe in supporting the community,” in the words of a longtime Lenexa customer on Tripadvisor.3 No published source names the owners, and the restaurant’s own site and social pages do not. A Dun & Bradstreet profile exists for “Pine & Bamboo Garden Company” in Shawnee Mission but its content is behind a paywall.6

The founding date is triangulated from the restaurant’s own claim. Facebook and Instagram videos posted in 2026 open with “For more than 43 years, Pine and Bamboo Garden has been serving up comforting, time-honored flavors,” which puts the opening around 1982–83.5 Customer memories corroborate a long run: “I’ve eaten there for 30+ years and still love their food” (Tripadvisor, undated but pandemic-era), “more than 30 years” (Nextdoor’s summary of neighbor reviews), and a Shawnee native who has eaten “in the original location in my hometown of Shawnee since I …” (Instagram, December 2025).347

For that entire period the restaurant was at 10915 Shawnee Mission Parkway, at the parkway’s intersection with Nieman Road, “visible from Shawnee Mission Parkway and just south of the downtown core” of Shawnee; the Johnson County Post also gave the address as 10915 W. 63rd St.8 In March 2022 the Post’s readers named it the No. 1 Chinese restaurant in Johnson County — “This Shawnee restaurant easily surpasses them all” — at a moment when it was still takeout-only: management said it could not return to dine-in “until the restaurant can bulk up staffing,” having struggled like many restaurants to hire after COVID-19.8

The move to Lenexa

In August 2025 the restaurant announced on Instagram: “We’re Moving! … New Address: Quivira Crossing shops, 12102 W. 87th St. Pkwy, Lenexa, KS 66215. Opening at the new location on September 27th, 2025!”9 A parallel Facebook post said it would be “moving by the end of September, 2025.”10 The actual opening slipped by a few weeks: the restaurant’s Facebook announced “The Pine and Bamboo Garden is officially opening its doors on October 16th, 2025 at our new home,” and a follow-up photo post confirmed “as of October 16, 2025, we are completely moved and open at our new location in Lenexa.”11 The Shawnee location is now marked closed on Yelp, Tripadvisor and Mapquest.3 Why the family left the Shawnee building after four decades is not stated in any source found.

The Lenexa space had previously been Fortune Palace, a Chinese restaurant that the Johnson County Post listed at 12102 W. 87th St. Parkway as an honorable mention in the same March 2022 poll that Pine & Bamboo won.8 The intersection of 87th Street Parkway and Quivira Road is about three miles south of the old Shawnee site.
