Piropos is Kansas City’s original Argentine steakhouse, founded in 2001 by Buenos Aires native Cristina Worden and her husband Gary, and anchored at Briarcliff Village since 2006 with panoramic views of downtown Kansas City.1

Description

Piropos brings the cuisine and culture of Buenos Aires to a hilltop perch in Kansas City’s Northland, with views stretching over the downtown skyline that have become as much a signature of the restaurant as its food.2 The name itself is a nod to Argentine tradition: a piropo is a poetic, flirtatious compliment offered in admiration — and the restaurant positions its cooking as a culinary piropo, an artistic expression of passion for Argentine culture.3

The menu is anchored in classic Argentine grilled meats — beef, lamb, and pork prepared in the tradition of the asado — alongside fresh seafood, hand-crafted empanadas made daily in-house, fresh salads, and homemade soups and sauces. The wine list exceeds 300 labels, drawn primarily from South American vineyards, with owner Cristina Worden making regular sourcing trips to Argentina’s Mendoza wine region.4 Many recipes originate from Cristina’s mother; others were developed collaboratively with the kitchen team after staff members were taken to Argentina for immersive training.5 Ingredients including Argentine cheeses, salt, and spices are sourced via air shipment twice monthly to maintain authenticity.6

In 2016, Piropos expanded by adding the Buenos Aires Room event space and an adjacent wedding chapel, extending the venue’s use for private events and celebrations.4 Zagat rated the restaurant 4.8 for Food, 4.7 for Decor, and 4.7 for Service (2017), and it has received recognition from local media for Best View, Best Food, and Best Service.2 As of June 2026 — the year of the FIFA World Cup hosted in the United States, including Kansas City — Piropos has been notably busy, with owner Worden anticipating significant patronage from visiting Argentinians following the Argentine national team.5

Ownership and history

Cristina Worden was born in Buenos Aires and has spent most of her adult life in Kansas City, maintaining deep emotional ties to Argentina while building her restaurant roots in the KC metro.5 Her husband Gary Worden, a longtime Parkville resident and entrepreneur, encouraged her to turn her lifelong passion for Argentine cuisine into a restaurant after he “loved the way she cooked.”6

The couple opened Piropos in 2001 at an original location in Parkville, establishing what they describe as “Kansas City’s original Argentinian dining experience.”1 The restaurant relocated to its current location at The Village at Briarcliff in 2006, where it has operated for nearly two decades on a hilltop overlooking the Kansas City skyline.4 The Briarcliff location seats up to 140 diners across the main dining room, bar, and outdoor patio.2

Cristina returns to Buenos Aires each year to research new recipes, menu items, and culinary trends, and has taken managers, cooks, and service staff to Argentina for training — a commitment to authenticity that defines the restaurant’s identity.5 Head Chef Jesus Almos brings experience from Capital Grille, Café Provance, and Frondize’s, and previously operated his own meat-focused Kansas City restaurant.4

The restaurant is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026.
