Topeka, KS-headquartered specialty coffee operation; founded 1993 by Jeff Taylor + Fred Polzin; KC operational presence via the Crossroads location in downtown Kansas City. Tier 2 with disclosure — KC operates the Crossroads café but the operation HQs in Topeka (out of Map dataset scope per Geographic-Scope).
Description
PT’s Coffee was founded in 1993 in Topeka, Kansas by Jeff Taylor and Fred Polzin. Pre-founding, Jeff Taylor was an award-winning photojournalist with bylines at Topeka Capital-Journal, Sports Illustrated, NY Times, USA Today, ESPN The Magazine, AP, and Reuters.1 In 1997, PT’s began roasting at its second retail location; in 1999, Fred led the formation of PT’s Coffee as a wholesale supplier of micro-roasted coffee in the Midwest.1
PT’s runs three retail locations + 200+ wholesale accounts across the country. The KC presence is the downtown Kansas City Crossroads location — operationally part of the KC coffee landscape but the operation HQs in Topeka. Topeka is out of Geographic-Scope for the KS.City Map dataset; the Crossroads location is in scope.
Why Tier 2 classification
PT’s Coffee KC operation is Tier 2 because: -KC operational presence (Crossroads café IS in KC; part of KC coffee scene)
- HQ in Topeka — non-KC headquartered operation
- Founders Taylor + Polzin operate from Topeka
- Wholesale operation scaled beyond single KC presence
The Tier 2 classification is the “regional-independent with KC presence” pattern. The brand is locally-rooted regionally but not specifically KC-owned-and-operated. Per Editorial-Firewall-Registry-Stress-Tests, disclosure documents the Topeka HQ status transparently.

Sources
- Status verified active 2026-06-23 via PT’s Coffee — Find Us / café locations (accessed 2026-06-23). Confirms two operating KC cafés: Power & Light (1310 Baltimore Ave, KCMO 64105 — the infobox address) and Crossroads (310 Southwest Blvd, KCMO 64108 — the address used in the Menu section), both open (Mon–Fri 6:30a–4p, Sat–Sun 7a–4p), plus Topeka Wheatfield Village. Cross-checked against PT’s Coffee Crossroads — Yelp, updated April 2026, 180 reviews. internal inconsistency: infobox address = Power & Light (1310 Baltimore Ave), but Description/Menu/sources frame the KC presence as the Crossroads location (310 Southwest Blvd). Both exist and are open; page should be reconciled to whichever location is the intended KC anchor (or document both).
