Purple Label Luxury Barbershop is a KC-metro native–owned premium barbershop in Overland Park, Kansas, founded by DeJuan Bonds — a Ruskin High School graduate who has served as Official Barber to the Kansas City Chiefs since 1998 and the Kansas City Royals since 2003, built from a first shop opened in 1997 into the first multi-ethnic barbershop in Johnson County.
Description
Purple Label Luxury Barbershop is an appointment-only premium barbershop at 11934 W 119th Street in Overland Park, Kansas, owned and operated by DeJuan Bonds.1 Bonds is a KC-metro native — a graduate of Ruskin High School in south Kansas City — who began cutting hair at age 14 using his mother’s clippers to give his brothers haircuts when the family couldn’t afford frequent visits to a shop.2 He trained at EaLa Mars Cosmetology and Barber College, graduating in 1995, and opened his first shop, Napps Barbershop, in Olathe in 1997.2
The Purple Label name carries deliberate weight: “Purple” references royalty and the Paleolithic tradition of hair care as a duty of the wisest priests; “Label” nods back to his original storefront, Napps.2 The shop is positioned as a five-star experience — appointment-only, clean lines, no walk-in chaos — built for a clientele that includes professional athletes and everyday Johnson County residents. Bonds has described his goal as broadening the demographic and diversity of the barbershop, and Purple Label bills itself as the first multi-ethnic shop in Johnson County, Kansas.23
Bonds’ professional reputation extends well beyond the shop floor. Since 1998 he has served as Official Barber to the Kansas City Chiefs, traveling with the team and setting up shop at Arrowhead on Thursdays during the season; since 2003 (one source says 2004) he has held the same role with the Kansas City Royals, for whom the club built a dedicated barbershop inside Kauffman Stadium in 2015.2 He created signature haircuts for players Eric Hosmer (“Hoz”) and Jarrod Dyson (“Zoom”), has cut Patrick Mahomes’ hair before Super Bowls and his wedding, and has been featured on ESPN, Sports Illustrated, HBO, and the NFL Network’s Hard Knocks.23
Ownership and history
DeJuan Bonds was born and raised in the Kansas City metro; he attended Ruskin High School in south Kansas City. His passion for barbering began at age 14 from financial necessity — cutting family members’ hair — and he recognized early that the quality of his work could support a career.2
