Queen Sweets & Bakery is a family-run Lebanese and Jordanian bakery and restaurant in the Northland, owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Mohamed and Kay Bataineh. Queen Sweets & Bakery operates from a Northland strip-mall storefront (Suite C) at the corner of 41st Street and Oak Trafficway in North Kansas City.¹² It began as a sweets-and-pastry counter and grew into a sit-down restaurant marrying northern Jordanian dishes with Lebanese recipes from owner Kay Bataineh’s grandmother.¹

The bakery side is built around hand-made Middle Eastern pastries: walnut and almond baklava (sold by the pound), kanafeh — a bird’s-nest pastry over a disc of sweet unsalted cheese, finished with rose-honey syrup — basbousa (semolina-and-coconut cake), and bain nareen (a phyllo cup with clotted cream and pistachios).¹ The restaurant menu adds mezze and grill items including hummus, baba ganoush, falafel and shawarma sandwiches, a mashawi mixed-kebab plate with saffron rice, lamb shank, Greek salad, and lentil soup.¹³ The kitchen is described as halal.⁴

Ownership and history

Queen Sweets & Bakery is owned and run by Mohamed and Kay Bataineh, a husband-and-wife team. Mohamed manages the storefront and customer service; Kay serves as executive chef and oversees menu development, building the menu from her Lebanese grandmother’s recipes alongside northern Jordanian dishes.¹ The couple opened the bakery in February 2018 and expanded it into a full-service restaurant in May 2019.¹
