Rey de Oros Taqueria is the fast-casual, drive-thru taqueria of the Cervantes family’s Dos de Oros group, open seven days from 9 a.m. in the former Martin City Coffee building at 13115 Holmes Road. It began in 2011 as Dos de Oros Taqueria at 650 E. Blue Ridge Boulevard — where Kansas City Magazine found “ultra-tender adovada piled high” and banda on the speakers — and took the new name and address in 2024, with a self-serve salsa bar, margaritas, breakfast tacos and chilaquiles until 11, quesabirria, sopes, tortas, a 16-taco family charola, smash burgers, and a case of house-made ice cream in flavors from mango con chile to rompope and tequila.

Description

The taqueria’s daily specials set the rhythm: al pastor tacos on Monday, crispy tacos Tuesday, burritos Wednesday, tortas Thursday, California burritos Friday, the 16-taco family charola Saturday and pupusas on Sunday.12 The ordering menu runs from breakfast (tacos with ham, chorizo, bacon or steak; chilaquiles con huevo; a 12-inch breakfast burrito; huevos a la mexicana with nopales) through caldos (posole, menudo, birria consomé, caldo de res, caldo de camarón), street tacos in double corn tortillas with a dozen meats including tripita and lengua, taco supremes and ranchos on grilled nopal, shrimp, salmon and cod tacos, a nopalitos taco, quesabirria with tomato-beef consomé, burritos up to a “Nacho Burrito Grande,” tamales by the dozen, mariscos (whole fried mojarra, ceviche and shrimp tostadas, cocktel), nachos and “esqueleto fries,” quesadillas, sopes, seven combos with a fountain drink, tortas (cubana, milanesa, lengua, tripita), single and double smash burgers, elotes, and a dessert list of fried cheesecake, mangonadas and house-made ice cream — mango, mango con chile, pistachio, nuez, coco, rompope, tequila, café, chocolate mint, cookie dough, cookies and cream, vanilla bean, gansito.2 Martin City’s business district described “a self-serve toppings bar,” margaritas and “a huge array of ice cream flavors.”3

Ownership and history

The taqueria is the second concept of Miguel Cervantes, who opened Dos de Oros a few hundred yards north in 2005 and added a fast-food taqueria — “We even make our own ice cream there” — in 2011.4 For its first thirteen years it operated as Dos de Oros Taqueria at 650 E. Blue Ridge Boulevard; Kansas City Magazine’s 2021 taco survey chose its adovada and told readers to find “the tiny taqueria on the west side of the street and not the pleasant family restaurant to the east.”5 Cervantes spent more than a year rebuilding the old Martin City Coffee building at 13115 Holmes, and after permitting delays the remodel was complete by April 2024; the grand opening, with a mariachi band and a ribbon cutting, was covered by Martin City’s district news in June 2024: “We’re grateful they followed our taqueria here from the old location … The drive-thru is a great addition, and when you include our patio space, we’ll be able to accommodate around 100 customers.”3 The move brought the new name; the group’s site calls it “Rey de Oros, formerly Dos de Oros Taqueria.”6 The old Blue Ridge storefront became DDO Chicken Express in July 2026.7 The Cervantes team has cooked at community events including KC Running Company’s Taco Mile in 2023, and Cervantes told the district, “We love Martin City … it’s the right place for us to be.”3
