Dos de Oros is a 200-seat, full-service Mexican restaurant on Holmes Road just north of Blue Ridge Boulevard in south Kansas City, opened in 2005 by Miguel Cervantes, a cook from Zacatecas and Guadalajara whose parents ran restaurants, a bakery and a grocery in Mexico. His wife Maria runs the dining room and his brother Pepe the kitchen; the menu is enormous — lunch combos, caldos, six kinds of enchiladas, alambres, molcajetes, fajitas, a seafood section, and, for the unconverted, burgers and Cajun cream pastas. It is the flagship of a small family group that also runs Rey de Oros Taqueria in Martin City and, since July 2026, DDO Chicken Express. Named for the two-of-coins card in the Spanish deck.

Description

Dos de Oros sits in a low building on the east side of Holmes Road between the Martin City district to the south and the Red Bridge neighborhoods to the north. The Independent’s Ann Slegman described “low ceilings, weathered driftwood walls festooned with sombreros” and a “casual vibe” that “belies the breadth and depth of its menu”; on her visit “every booth was full.”1 The restaurant runs rotating lunch specials Monday–Friday until 4 p.m., burrito nights with two-for-$10 margaritas on Mondays and Tuesdays, fajita nights on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and a weekend specialty meal.2

The menu on the first-party ordering site runs to more than two dozen sections. Lunch (Mon–Fri 11–3:30) offers fourteen $13.99 combos and a dozen specials from a New Mexico salad to a jambalaya; appetizers include ceviche, tostadas de ceviche, queso fundido, ten mini flautas with avocado cream and six mini chimichangas; there are shrimp and seven-seas caldos, four entrée salads, burritos, tortas (adovada, carnitas, cubana), tostadas, three families of enchiladas (red-sauce, verdes, and flour-tortilla “cream” enchiladas with spinach or shrimp and avocado), quesadillas served with jicama-pineapple slaw, chimichangas, soft and crispy taco plates, taco salads, seven dinner combos, a seafood section (camarones al mojo, a la diabla and con crema; blackened and baked fish; shrimp-and-avocado and Baja tacos), fajitas up to a four-meat Dos de Oros platter, a molcajete “served over a hot volcanic stone,” parrillada, five alambres, five burgers, three cream pastas and vegetarian plates.3 Cervantes told The Independent, “We use a lot of salads which makes a difference. It’s not all rice and beans. We also incorporate a lot of shrimp and seafood as well as steak and chicken” — and that the burgers and pasta are deliberate: “Miguel learned a lot from his experience at chain restaurants.”1

Ownership and history

Miguel Cervantes is from Zacatecas and Guadalajara, where his parents owned restaurants, a bakery and a grocery store and he cooked alongside them.41 He came to Kansas City more than two decades before 2020 to work at “a large chain restaurant” — he met his wife Maria when both worked at The Cheesecake Factory — and about two years later opened Chelly’s Café, a Mexican restaurant in Grandview that later moved to 85th and Wornall and is run by his sister and brother-in-law.1 In 2005 he opened Dos de Oros; the name is the two-of-coins card in a Spanish deck.14 Maria Meraz Cervantes runs the front of house and his brother Jose “Pepe” Cervantes is head cook; the couple had two teenage children in 2020.41

In 2011 Cervantes added Dos de Oros Taqueria, a fast-casual counter with house-made ice cream at 650 E Blue Ridge Boulevard; Kansas City Magazine’s 2021 taco guide warned readers “there are dos” and sent them to “the tiny taqueria on the west side of the street and not the pleasant family restaurant to the east” for its adovada.15 Rather than open more units, he expanded the restaurant itself in 2019 to about 200 seats and roughly 40 employees: “I like it this way because I have a more hands-on, taking care of business approach to running my restaurant.”1 The taqueria was renamed Rey de Oros and moved a few hundred yards south into the former Martin City Coffee building at 13115 Holmes in 2024, with a drive-thru and a June 2024 ribbon cutting; the vacated Blue Ridge storefront reopened on July 14, 2026 as DDO Chicken Express, fried and mesquite-grilled chicken with charro beans and fresh tortillas.467 The group’s site brands the three as DDO Restaurants and claims a Kansas City Star readers’ vote for Best Mexican Restaurant and 2026 Martin City “Best of South KC” awards; KCTV5 featured the restaurant in a July 2023 “Top 5 Mexican restaurants” segment and an August 2024 “Dining with Dave Eckert.”24
