Rice House occupies a storefront in a shopping strip on West 87th Street Parkway in western Lenexa, the commercial corridor that runs along the north side of 87th Street between the Interstate 35 interchange and the city’s western neighborhoods.¹² Wanderlog’s Google summary describes it plainly as “a casual Chinese and sushi establishment located in a strip mall”; Nextdoor’s business profile calls it a full-service Chinese restaurant with a sushi bar and a kid-friendly room.²³

The menu is two restaurants on one card. The Chinese side is the American-Chinese canon organized by protein — chicken, pork, beef, shrimp — served with white rice at $10.55 to $13.45, with fried rice, lo mein and mei fun, an eighteen-item appetizer list from egg rolls ($3.75) to hamachi kama ($12.95), and a numbered lunch-special list (chicken with broccoli, beef with broccoli, shrimp fried rice and the rest) at $9.75 including fried rice, a spring roll or crab rangoon, and soup, served 11 to 3 every day but Tuesday.¹ The sushi side lists twenty-three nigiri and sashimi choices from tuna ($6) to sweet shrimp ($10), thirty-one standard rolls from a $5.75 California to an $11.95 spider roll, and thirty-four house signature rolls at $10.95–15.95 — the ordering site’s gallery shows a Chiefs Roll, a Crabmeat Wasabi Roll, a Golden Mango Roll, a Hot Mama Roll, a Tiger Roll and a Rainbow Roll.¹⁴ Reviewers’ favorites cluster on orange chicken, General Tso’s with fried rice, honey chicken, the avocado salad, and the Hawaiian and Rock n Roll rolls.³²

Two namesakes complicate the record. A “Rice Garden” at 15000 W 87th Street Parkway — the next address block — is marked closed on Yelp; whether it was a predecessor, a competitor or a relative is unknown.⁸ And a separate Rice House at 13003 State Line Road in south Kansas City, Missouri (ricehousekcmo.com) shares the name and the American-Chinese format but makes no reference to Lenexa; no common ownership is documented.⁹ Rice House Chinese Restaurants in Tonganoxie and elsewhere in Kansas are likewise unrelated as far as the record shows.
