River Bluff Brewing (River Market)

River Bluff Brewing at River Market is the Kansas City taproom of an award-heavy independent brewery founded in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 2018 — where its founders restored an 1853 building (two pre-Prohibition breweries and their brick cellars included) rather than let it be demolished. The KC location opened in the Historic Water Building at 2nd & Main in early 2021 and has since collected World Beer Cup and GABF gold.

Description

River Bluff arrived in the River Market with a preservationist’s résumé: in St. Joseph the founders saved an 1853 building — home to two pre-Prohibition breweries, 1800s brewing cellars intact — from near-demolition and put a brewery back in it.¹² The KC taproom occupies another historic municipal building: the 1905 City Water Department building at 2nd & Main, originally built as the stable, warehouse and shops for the water department, and most recently home to Garrett’s Market — River Bluff took roughly 5,500 square feet of the ground floor.³ The taproom carries a decorated beer program led by an ex-Boulevard head brewer.²⁴

Beer program

The KC location is more than a satellite tap: head brewer Joel Cummings (previously of boulevard-brewing) brews Kansas-City-specific beers on a system in the River Market building, while flagship styles are also trucked down from St. Joseph.³ Year-round beers include:⁵

River Bluff’s award record spans both breweries: 2024 World Beer Cup Gold and 2024 GABF Gold (American-Belgo-style / fruited wheat), plus a 2026 World Beer Cup Silver in a Belgo-American style and GABF Silver medals in 2019 and 2022.⁵²

Ownership and history

Dec 2020 → 2021	KC River Market second location announced (Dec 2020), targeted for spring 2021 in the 1905 City Water Department building (former Garrett’s Market space).43

Tier deliberation (recorded; re-examined under the 2026-07-15 owner-involvement doctrine): independently owned, but founded and headquartered in St. Joseph — outside the KC-metro core — with the River Market taproom a satellite of that regional Missouri independent. The 2026-07-15 doctrine makes the Tier 1 measure an owner who lives in KC and stays actively involved with the KC business; a St. Joseph-based ownership running a KC satellite is the opposite signal, so this is a known Tier 2 case, not a missing-info default-to-Tier-1 case.
