Rochester Brewing & Roasting Co. is a Crossroads brewery and coffee roaster that brews craft beer and roasts specialty coffee under one roof — billed as Kansas City’s first combined craft brewery and coffee roastery. Founded by a circle of local friends and conceived at a 2017 Fourth of July party, it opened on Washington Street in summer 2019. Independent and locally owned, the business takes its name from the historic 19th-century Rochester Brewery that once operated in the same Crossroads neighborhood.
Description
Rochester Brewing & Roasting Co. is a dual-concept beverage producer in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District that brews craft beer and roasts specialty coffee in the same building — a rare combination the company describes as the city’s first (and at launch, only) craft brewery and coffee roaster under one roof.12 The operation pairs an in-house roasting program with a working brewhouse, serving coffee, espresso, and house beers from its taproom and café at 2129 Washington Street.1
The name is a deliberate civic callback: it comes from the historic Rochester Brewery that operated in the Crossroads in the late 1800s before merging with two other local breweries to form the Kansas City Brewing Co.2 The modern Rochester revives that name in the same neighborhood.
Ownership and history
The idea for Rochester was conceived “over a few beers” at Philip Enloe’s Fourth of July party in 2017.13 Co-founders Philip Enloe and Marshall Van Tuyl had been friends since middle school and were doubles partners on their high school tennis team; both left for college and returned to Kansas City after graduating.3 Enloe had been roasting coffee as a hobby for years — beginning with a popcorn popper and graduating to a garage roaster — while Van Tuyl’s interest moved from craft beer in college to home brewing after Enloe gave him a brewing kit.13
The concept was pitched to Joe Nichols at that 2017 party; Nichols and investing partner Dan Batliner backed it, and David Bulcock — a college friend of Van Tuyl’s — relocated from Dallas to join the management team as an owner.3 The business operates as a partnership among Van Tuyl, Enloe, Bulcock, Nichols, and Batliner.3 Rochester opened in July 2019 with limited coffee-only hours while the brew space was finished, then held its full grand opening — serving both beer and coffee — at the end of August 2019.23 The company later expanded with a second location in Historic Downtown Parkville — set inside vintage train cars, with an added house-made donut/pastry program — extending the dual brewery-and-roaster concept into the Northland.4
