Sama Zama is a Japanese izakaya — long billed as Kansas City’s original and, for years, its lone izakaya — founded by Yokohama-born owner Erika Koike. Opened on Westport Road in 2012 and since relocated a few blocks south to Central Street, it serves ramen, share plates, and small dishes drawn from family recipes in an intimate, owner-run room.

Description

Sama Zama is a Japanese izakaya — a casual drinking-and-dining establishment where, in owner Erika Koike’s words, you “come with friends and family, or someone that you can share things with. You try a whole bunch of different items and have a cultural experience.”1 For much of its run it was described as Kansas City’s lone izakaya, serving ramen, gyoza, korokke, tonkatsu, and a rotating roster of small, thoughtful plates, many based on family recipes and Koike’s own creations.21 The current Central Street room is small and intimate; reviewers note its personal, owner-run character — including a famously locked front door that Koike opens to welcome guests in — and a BYOB policy.3

Ownership and history

Sama Zama is owned by Erika Koike, who was born and raised in Yokohama, Japan, and came to the United States for college.1 She opened her first izakaya-style restaurant, One Bite, in Overland Park, Kansas, in 2006 — before izakayas had taken hold in trendy U.S. food cities.1 When One Bite’s lease ended in 2012, she moved north to Westport Road in Kansas City, Missouri, and opened Sama Zama at 425 Westport Rd, in a space that had for two decades housed art-house cinemas (the Bijou, then the original Tivoli).12 After more than eight years in Westport, Koike relocated the restaurant when her lease ended — described as a mutual decision — to its current home at 3906 Central St.43

Disputes

  • Seed brief billed Sama Zama as Tier 1; reclassified to Tier 2 because owner Erika Koike is a native of Yokohama, Japan, not a born-and-raised KC-metro native (the marker Tier 1 measures).
  • Seed address was 425 Westport Rd (original 2012 location); the restaurant has since relocated to 3906 Central St. Current address used throughout.
  • Some aggregator listings show an erroneous “established 1997” — not supported by primary reporting; the verified founding year is 2012.
