Scout Coffee is a community-forward coffee shop in downtown Blue Springs, founded in May 2019 by Jared Montgomery — a Blue Springs native who returned to his hometown to bring KC-quality coffee culture to his own community. Motto: “coffee and kindness.”¹²

Description

Scout Coffee occupies a storefront in downtown Blue Springs at 1400 W. Main St., operating as a community anchor for the neighborhood’s Main Street corridor. The shop is built around specialty coffee — including standout lattes and “wildest latte creations” alongside strong black coffee offerings — and has earned a reputation as a welcoming gathering space that functions as much as a community living room as a café.¹³

The signature Snickerdoodle latte is the shop’s best-known menu item, capturing the warm, spiced flavor of the classic cookie in espresso form.² The café’s guiding philosophy is “coffee and kindness” — a mission that emphasizes hospitality and community connection alongside beverage quality.²

After establishing a loyal following in Blue Springs, owner Jared Montgomery expanded Scout Coffee to a second location at 101 W. Walnut St. in Grain Valley, which opened in November 2022.³ Both locations maintain consistent hours: Monday–Friday 6 am–5 pm, Saturday 7 am–5 pm, Sunday 7 am–2 pm.⁴

Ownership and history

Founding

Jared Montgomery grew up in Blue Springs and spent over a decade exploring the Kansas City metro’s coffee scene before deciding to open his own shop. His motivation was explicitly place-rooted: “I always had to go to Kansas City for a good atmosphere and a good cup of coffee. So, eventually I wanted to bring that to my own community.”³

In 2019, Montgomery established Scout Coffee at 1400 W. Main St. in downtown Blue Springs, bringing what he described as “KC coffee culture to our hometown of Blue Springs, adding our own personality and flair.”¹ The shop had been open less than a year when the COVID-19 shutdown hit in March 2020, yet the business survived and grew through community support — a period documented by the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce as an example of the city’s “#BlueSpringsStrong” ethos.²

Local-roots context

Montgomery’s founding story is an explicitly “return home” narrative. He grew up in Blue Springs, built his coffee palate exploring Kansas City, and came back to eliminate the commute for his own neighbors. The Grain Valley location later extended that community mission to the adjacent suburb.³
