Scratch Gourmet Kitchen is an owner-operated, scratch-made American (with Italian leanings) restaurant and wine bar in Prairie Village, Kansas, built by husband-and-wife founders Tyler and Monica Morrison. It began life in May 2020 as Scratch Gourmet Express & Catering — a pandemic-era catering and carryout operation — grew into a counter-service café, and evolved into a casual fine-dining, Wine Spectator Award–winning destination. (Not affiliated with the Lee’s Summit “Scratch” brand.)
Description
Scratch Gourmet Kitchen is a locally owned, scratch-made American restaurant and wine bar in Prairie Village, Kansas, describing its food as “a modern twist on comfort foods” — elevated comfort food and scratch-made Italian and American cuisine paired with craft cocktails and an award-winning wine list. The kitchen is led by Executive Chef Mitchell Fetterling, a Kansas City native who previously cooked at the two-Michelin-star Saison in San Francisco.
The concept emphasizes fresh, clean, from-scratch ingredients. Its beverage program has earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence (a curated list of 165-plus wine selections overseen by co-owner Tyler Morrison), and the restaurant has collected OpenTable Diners’ Choice (2024) and Award of Excellence (2025) honors. The business also retains a full-service catering arm — its original line of business — alongside dine-in service.
In its early years Scratch was recognized as Best New Restaurant in Johnson County (2022, Shawnee Mission Post) and Best Caterer in Johnson County (2023).
Ownership and history
Scratch is owned and operated by Tyler Morrison and his wife, Monica Morrison. The couple relocated to Kansas City in 2019 — Tyler had worked at Topgolf’s Dallas headquarters in corporate finance, golf operations, and experiential hospitality, and came to KC as VP of operations for a downtown golf-simulator startup; Monica had worked at WingStop’s Dallas headquarters, where she managed the openings of 350-plus stores. When the pandemic derailed the startup plan, the Morrisons launched Scratch Gourmet Express & Catering in May 2020 as a carryout-and-catering operation in Prairie Village.
The business grew in stages: from a 2020 catering/ghost-kitchen operation, to a counter-service café (brick-and-mortar in 2021), and finally — around July 2023 — into a casual fine-dining restaurant and wine bar with a full chef-driven menu and cocktail program. In early 2026 the Morrisons expanded into the former Story. restaurant space in Prairie Village (taking access February 1, 2026, completing a remodel in about 27 days, and reopening to the public in early March 2026), substantially increasing seating and bar capacity. Tyler Morrison has stated an ambition to grow into “one of the top hospitality groups in Kansas City.”
The Morrisons are not Kansas City natives (Tyler grew up near Fort Worth, Texas), but they chose KC as home in 2019, built an original concept here, and report having helped raise or donate $250,000-plus to local KC charities since 2020. Executive Chef Mitchell Fetterling is a Kansas City native.
This Scratch is independent and locally owned, and is not affiliated with the separate “Scratch” brand in Lee’s Summit.
