Description

Shagan’s Chicken & Parathas serves fresh, home-cooked North Indian food from a storefront at 14521 Metcalf Ave in south Overland Park.¹ The kitchen is named for the chicken- and vegetable-based dishes — chicken curry, butter chicken, matar paneer — that owner Shagan Bajwa cooks alongside her signature handmade parathas.² The menu changes daily depending on what Bajwa decides to make, with diners typically choosing from a few appetizers, three to five entrées, and several types of paratha; the day’s offerings are posted on Facebook and on an interior whiteboard.² Because the breads are made to order, the restaurant recommends calling ahead.³

Ownership and history

The restaurant is owned and operated by Shagan Bajwa and her husband, Sam Bajwa.² Before opening the storefront, Bajwa worked at a bank and made parathas on nights and weekends for friends and family through a private Facebook group.² The couple leased the Metcalf space — formerly home to the barbecue restaurant Smokey’s on the Blvd — initially as a commercial kitchen for the home-based paratha business, then gradually added folding tables and chairs and began serving hot dishes prepared daily, growing it into a full North Indian restaurant for lunch and dinner.² Bajwa, who describes cooking for people as “one of my greatest passions,” recreates the favorite North Indian dishes she makes for her own household.² Feast Magazine described the business as having opened “almost a year ago” in its September 2019 article, placing the founding around 2018.²
