Southside Wood Company (historically Southside Patio and Wood / Southside Coal Co.) is a family-owned firewood and smoking-wood yard at 3001 Merriam Lane, Kansas City, KS — the parent business that shares its lot with Woodyard Bar-B-Que. Founded as a coal yard in 1912–1913 (sources vary by one year) by the Schloegel family; still sells bagged and cord wood for BBQ and fireplaces. Tier 1 multi-generation Wyandotte County business.123

Description

Southside sells smoking and fireplace woods (apple, oak, cherry, pecan, hickory, cedar, hedge, piñon, etc.) by bag and by cord, with local pickup and delivery. The yard is the operational and cultural parent of Woodyard BBQ: the restaurant cooks over wood the yard sells and grew out of free lunch grills for wood customers.132

Published bag prices on the first-party site (subject to change): apple/piñon large bag $50 / small $25; oak-cherry-pecan-cedar-hedge-hickory large $40 / small $25. Seasoned oak cord pricing posted for 2023 season (½ cord / full cord, pickup vs delivered+stacked) — treat as historical list prices and call for current quotes.3

Ownership and history

Family narrative (first-party + Star):

  • Founded on Westport Road as a coal business near Kelley’s bar; early names include Southside Coal Co. and Southside Patio and Wood.1
  • Moved to Merriam Lane in the 1950s and shifted to wood as coal demand fell.12
  • Frank Schloegel the first (German immigrant line) starts the business; Frank II and brothers on wood/gas; Frank Schloegel III owns Southside and co-owns Woodyard with son-in-law Jeff Scott.42
  • Annual Groundhog Day customer tradition covered by The Pitch.5

Founding year: Southside about page says 1913; Woodyard “Our Full Story” and 2025 Star piece use 1912. Carry both with attribution rather than forcing one number.12
