Description

Woodyard Bar-B-Que sits on the lot of a working firewood and patio-supply business on Merriam Lane in Kansas City, Kansas. The restaurant’s identity is tied to that co-location: it cooks over the hardwood the yard sells, and pecan wood in particular has been the focus of trade and food-press coverage of the pit.1

The restaurant has drawn national television attention as a Kansas City barbecue stop.2

Ownership and history

By the business’s own account, Southside was founded in 1912 by Frank Schloegel the first as a coal yard. Coal gave way to wood and gasoline across the generations — Frank Schloegel II ran the wood side while his brothers Robert and Carl ran the gas side.3

The restaurant began informally: Frank Schloegel II kept a grill going at lunch, feeding customers and friends for free while selling wood deliveries over the phone. Frank Schloegel III continued the practice and began smoking for charities and church fundraisers, eventually opening the restaurant in response to repeated requests.3

Frank Schloegel III owns Southside Patio and Wood Company and co-owns Woodyard Bar-B-Que, both at 3001 Merriam Lane. The restaurant was in practice started by Jeff Scott, Frank III’s son-in-law, who brought prior restaurant experience and developed the rub and the general flavor profile of the food.3

The wood yard side of the operation has its own local reputation, including an annual Groundhog Day tradition covered by The Pitch.4

Independence: No chain, franchise, or outside-investor parent identified. Family-owned across the Schloegel line, resident in the metro.
