Swagat Fine Indian Cuisine is a Choong-family Indian restaurant in the Zona Rosa shopping center at 7407 NW 87th St. in the Northland of Kansas City, Missouri, opened in 2002 as the first Indian restaurant in the Northland.12
Description
Swagat Fine Indian Cuisine is a sit-down North Indian restaurant in Kansas City’s Northland, in the Zona Rosa shopping center.1 The name “Swagat” is a Sanskrit word for a joyful welcome to guests, and the restaurant pairs that hospitality with a richly appointed dining room and a menu spanning butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, paneer masala, tandoori, curries, and biryanis.1 It has served the Northland for over two decades and offers dine-in, takeout, delivery, and catering.1
Ownership and history
Swagat is part of the Choong family’s Kansas City-metro Indian-restaurant dynasty, which began with India Palace in Overland Park (1995) — billed as the oldest Indian restaurant in Kansas.2 Founder Gurdev Choong grew up farming in Punjab with his three brothers, later worked as a seaman and laborer across the Persian Gulf, Mediterranean, Dubai, and Greece, and immigrated to Boston, where the brothers opened their first India Palace in Union Square before relocating to Kansas City.2
After establishing India Palace (Overland Park and Lawrence) and Bombay Cafe, the family launched Swagat in 2002, originally in a small strip mall off Barry Road and later moving to the more upscale Zona Rosa shopping center.23 When it opened, there had been no Indian restaurant in the Northland, making Choong a culinary pioneer in that part of the metro.23 Komal Choong, who grew up observing the family’s restaurants, now represents Swagat; in a VoyageKC interview she noted that cooks who came up through the family’s kitchens went on to open several other Indian restaurants across the KC metro.2
