Tacos Borrachos

Tacos Borrachos is a counter-service Mexican taquería at 10049 W. 87th Street in Overland Park, Kansas. Opened in late 2024 by longtime Overland Park restaurateurs Derrick and Joanne Lam — owners of the nearby Chinese dim sum spot ABC Cafe — alongside a silent third partner experienced in Mexican cuisine, it serves street-style tacos, burritos, and bowls built on hand-pressed tortillas, with an open kitchen and a self-serve salsa bar.¹²

Description

Tacos Borrachos — Spanish for “drunken tacos” — is a vibrant, counter-service Mexican eatery on the 87th Street corridor in Overland Park.¹ Customers order at the counter and can watch food being prepared in an open kitchen, where tortillas are pressed by hand and meats such as carne asada and chicken al pastor are grilled to order.² The menu centers on street tacos in multiple forms — including chicken tinga, quesabirria, grilled steak, and fish — alongside burritos, fiesta bowls, elote (street corn), chips and guacamole, and Frutopia popsicles. A self-serve salsa bar lets diners add multiple house salsas and toppings.¹

Co-owner Derrick Lam has described the intent as a more atmospheric, “happy-hour feel” rather than a typical quick-service taco shop, with planned additions including craft cocktails, margaritas, and breakfast tacos.¹² The restaurant operates 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily.¹

Ownership and history

Tacos Borrachos is owned by Derrick and Joanne Lam, who for roughly four years prior had owned and operated ABC Cafe, a Chinese dim sum restaurant located in the same 87th Street strip mall — two doors down from the new taquería.¹ The Lams launched Tacos Borrachos with a third, silent partner who brings experience in Mexican cuisine; the couple themselves cite multiple trips to Mexico in developing the concept.¹²

The restaurant opened in the former space of what was reportedly an old signage store, near landmarks including a QuikTrip, the Central Resource Library, Beer Cave Wine and Spirits, and a Subway.² It was first reported as a forthcoming opening in September 2024² and soft-opened in late October 2024.¹

Lam framed the venture as a deliberate departure: “We knew that if we were going to do this, we had to have something that would set us apart from everybody else.”² No food-truck origin is documented in available reporting; the seed assumption of a food-truck history is **** and is not supported by the press found.
