Tacos on Wheels is, as every write-up feels obliged to note, not a truck: a small counter-service taquería in a building at 299 South 10th Street in Kansas City, Kansas, that started on wheels and parked for good. It serves street tacos “fully loaded” — onion, guacamole, salsa, lime — plus enchiladas, burritos and plates, afternoon into late night, and its tacos al pastor were named the best in the city on KCUR’s 2025 taco episode. It is a stop on the KCK Taco Trail, where it is the recommended place for lengua.
Description
Tacos on Wheels occupies a small building on South 10th Street just below Central Avenue in the near-downtown part of Kansas City, Kansas, a block or two from the Interstate 70 / I-670 interchange.12 Visit Kansas City Kansas, the county’s tourism bureau, has used the name as a running joke since at least 2021: it “sounds like it’s a food truck but that’s only how they started! They moved into a building on 10th Street.”3 The tourism bureau’s 2023 Taco Trail guide sends trail-walkers there specifically for lengua — “a classic Mexican dish of beef tongue which has been braised with garlic and onions.”1
The menu, as reflected in reviews and delivery listings, is a compact taquería list: tacos of al pastor, carne asada, chorizo, lengua, shredded chicken, fish and a vegan option, each “fully loaded” with onions, guacamole, sauce and lime; chicken enchiladas verdes and enchilada plates; steak burritos; huevos con chorizo.24 Ben Fuentes of Kansas City Foodie Finds, on KCUR’s July 2025 best-tacos episode, gave the al pastor the top spot: “Their marinade is perfect, not overwhelming, and the meat is moist and juicy with a slight crisp from the heat of the grill” — noting, again, that it is “ironically enough, not a food truck.”5 Reviewers cite the salsa selection and late hours; a review aggregator lists 3–11 p.m. daily.2
Ownership and history
No owner has been named in any source found — not the tourism bureau’s listings, the KCUR segment, or the delivery-app pages. What is documented is the arc: a taco truck that became a fixed location on S. 10th Street by January 2021, when Visit KCK listed it among “Tacos to Go” with a call-ahead number and Postmates delivery.3 The Taco the Town podcast recorded an episode at the restaurant in March 2021 with Visit KCK’s Rebekah Baughman as a guest.6 It has been on the KCK Taco Trail since the trail’s early rounds and remains a listed stop.1
