Taqueria Ignacio is Chef Ruben Leal’s Sonoran-style taco pop-up operating out of Garden House Cafe (1639 SW Blvd, KCK’s Rosedale). Leal is the founder of Caramelo Tortillas (Lawrence, KS) — a nationally acclaimed tortilleria whose flour tortillas are used by Michelin-starred chefs and featured by David Chang on Netflix. The tacos are a direct showcase of those tortillas. Seasonally closed as of Jan 2026. Named in KCUR’s Best New Restaurants 2025.

Description

Taqueria Ignacio is Ruben Leal’s pop-up taco concept inside Garden House Cafe in KCK’s Rosedale neighborhood, serving Sonoran-style street tacos built on the supple, char-kissed flour tortillas he produces at his Lawrence, KS tortilleria Caramelo Tortillas. The concept is simple: carne asada on the best possible tortilla. Leal grew up in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, moved to Lawrence for work at the University of Kansas, and parlayed his family tortilla recipe into a nationally recognized brand now distributed to all 50 states and used by Michelin-starred chefs including Enrique Olvera (Atla, NYC). Taqueria Ignacio is where you taste the tortilla as the vehicle it was meant to be. Note: operating on a seasonal schedule; call Garden House Cafe before visiting to confirm current availability.

Tier classification

Tier 2 — KC-area dedicated, Sonoran-born, Lawrence-based. Ruben Leal was born and raised in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico — not KC-born/raised.1 He relocated to Lawrence, KS, where Caramelo Tortillas is headquartered. Taqueria Ignacio operates in KCK as a pop-up, making him a KC-area operator but not a KC-native. His ties to the KC food scene are genuine (multiple KC restaurant partnerships, KCK pop-up presence, featured in KC press) but Tier 1 would require KC-metro birth or upbringing per the doctrine. Tier 2 on KC-dedicated grounds.

Note on format: Taqueria Ignacio is a seasonal pop-up/residency, not a standalone brick-and-mortar. Registry page documents the concept and its chef; operating status should be re-verified seasonally. Call Garden House (913) 608-9514 before visiting.

Caramelo Tortillas context: Leal’s tortillas are Sonoran-style flour (thinner, chewier than Tex-Mex), made with Kansas-milled flour and lard. Corn tortillas also now in production. Used at Fox & Pearl and other KC-area restaurants.1
