Taqueria Las Arenosas is a no-frills, early-opening taqueria at 1203 Kansas Avenue in Armourdale, Kansas City, Kansas, known on the KCK Taco Trail for its long list of tortas, its menudo, and an al pastor that a trail travelogue called “greasier… in all the right ways.” Doors open at 7:30 a.m. six days a week; the corporate name on the sign’s Facebook page is Arenosas Mexican Food Inc., motto “Simplemente lo mejor.”

Description

Las Arenosas is a small storefront on the north side of the 1200 block of Kansas Avenue, the Armourdale commercial strip that doubles as one of the densest taco corridors in Wyandotte County — El Machetazo is a hundred yards west at 1101, California Taco Shop is across the street at 1268, and Tierra Caliente and the San Antonio tortilleria sit farther down toward the river.¹² The Kansas City, Kansas convention and visitors bureau sums the restaurant up in one line: “Known for authentic Mexican food and extensive torta options at an affordable price”; Kansas Tourism’s listing adds “and a great selection of healthy choices.”¹³

The Yelp-mirrored consensus is the same one line from the customer side — “There’s nothing fancy here, but it’s good authentic Mexican food” — with tacos, tortas, menudo and gorditas the dishes reviewers name, and the small room and thin parking the complaints.⁴ On the al pastor, the Van Life KC Taco Trail log of 2022 wrote: “The al pastor from Las Arenosas was on the greasier side in all the right ways.”⁵ The 7:30 a.m. opening, unusual on the corridor, points to a breakfast and menudo trade for the neighborhood’s industrial shift workers.¹

Ownership and history

The business’s Facebook page is registered under the corporate name Arenosas Mexican Food Inc., with the tagline “Simplemente lo mejor” and the options dine-in, take-out and in-store pickup; both tourism bureaus link to it as the restaurant’s official page.⁶¹³ No owner or officer is named in any source located, and the Kansas Secretary of State’s business filing for the corporation has not been pulled.

Third-party reviews begin in February 2017, so the taqueria has been at 1203 Kansas Ave since at least then.⁴ It was on the KCK Taco Trail roster by the trail’s 2021–2022 travelogue era and its CVB listing remains filed under the Taco Trail category.⁵¹ “Las Arenosas” (“the sandy places”) is a common Mexican place-name; which town, if any, the owners are honoring is undocumented.
