Taqueria Mix-T-Co is a small, family-run Mexican restaurant at 3616 Independence Avenue in Kansas City’s Historic Northeast, opened by Bernardino García-Martínez and his family around the turn of 2026. The name is a play on Mixteco, the indigenous language of the Mixteca region of Guerrero, where the family is from, and the menu is home-style Guerrerense cooking rather than the Jalisco- or Michoacán-style taqueria fare more common on the Avenue: tacos on tortillas pressed in-house, picaditas, huaraches, mole de pollo, enmoladas, pozole and menudo, and birria or quesabirria with consomé. It is a late-day operation — open from 2 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. most days — with online ordering through its own site.
Description
Taqueria Mix-T-Co sits in a storefront on the south side of Independence Avenue at 36th Street, inside the Independence Avenue International Marketplace corridor of the Historic Northeast.1 The Northeast News, in a January 2026 piece produced with the Independence Avenue Community Improvement District and the Northeast Chamber of Commerce, introduced it as “a new restaurant serving up Mexican favorites” that “keeps a low profile online.”1 The restaurant’s own site is spare — “authentic Mexican street tacos and fresh tortillas,” hours, and an ordering link — and that is essentially the whole public footprint beyond a Facebook page.23
The menu is the reason to notice it. Where most taquerias on the Avenue cook in the style of Jalisco, Michoacán or Mexico City, the García-Martínez family cooks the food of Guerrero’s Mixteca: tostadas de tinga, flautas with consomé, quesabirria with consomé and beef broth, corn quesadillas made from fresh masa, picaditas (the thick, pinched-edge corn cakes) with crema and cheese or with meat, sopes, and tacos on tortillas made in-house — the ordering menu prices tacos two ways, “con tortilla fresca” and “con tortilla embolsada” (bagged, i.e. store-bought), with the fresh tortilla costing about a dollar more.14 Around the tacos are the plates a Guerrerense household would recognize: mole de pollo and enmoladas, huaraches, tacos dorados, caldo de pollo and caldo de res, pozole served with tortilla, bread or tostada, and menudo, plus tortas, burritos and, for children, wings, tenders and fries.4 Aguas frescas come in three sizes; the cooler holds Jarritos, Mundet, non-alcoholic sangria and energy drinks.4
The Northeast News described the room as “a cozy, family-oriented spot where good food and friendly, straightforward service come together,” with early reviews “welcoming and homey,” and quoted the family on why they cook what they cook: “For many of us, food is a way to stay connected to our roots, traditions, and family — even when far from home.”1
Ownership and history
Bernardino García-Martínez and his family are from Loma Zoyatlán, a village in the Mixteca region of Guerrero.1 The restaurant’s name is a tribute to that origin: “Mixteco is an indigenous language from the Mixteca region of Mexico, mainly in the state of Guerrero, encompassing both coastal and mountainous areas. The name honors their identity, heritage, and the cultural traditions they share through their food.”1 No prior restaurant venture by the family in Kansas City is documented.
The opening date is not published. The Northeast News flagged the restaurant as a “new restaurant alert” in a Facebook post on January 16, 2026 and ran its sponsored profile on January 28, 2026; the site’s copyright line reads 2026.512 The brief for this page places the opening in late 2025 or early 2026, which is consistent with that timeline but unconfirmed.
The space
3616 Independence Avenue has a layered address history. Third-party listings (Yelp, Groupon, the Northeast Kansas City Chamber directory) carry a Taqueria Super Taco at the same number, with a different phone, which suggests it was the previous tenant; no source records when it closed.6 An August 2021 Northeast News item separately placed “the Taco Express” at 3616 Independence Avenue, which the Registry’s taco-express-kc page treats as an unresolved conflict with that business’s known address.1 Which of these preceded Mix-T-Co directly is an open question.
