Tasso’s Greek Restaurant is a Greek restaurant and grocery located at 8411 Wornall Road in the Waldo neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, roughly five minutes south of the Country Club Plaza.¹ The restaurant serves authentic Greek cuisine — gyros, flaming saganaki, the “Tour of Greece” dip platter, and a Greek salad with the house signature dressing among its noted dishes.³ On Friday and Saturday evenings starting at 6:30 pm, Tasso’s offers live Greek music, belly dancing, and the tradition of breaking dishes, an atmosphere the restaurant bills as its specialty.¹³ In addition to the dining room, the business operates an attached Greek grocery.²

Ownership and history

Tasso and Katina Kalliris emigrated from Greece to Kansas City in 1960 and started a family.¹ In 1976, the couple began selling gyro sandwiches from a small bar in Brookside, Missouri.¹ As the business grew, they opened their own restaurant on 75th Street, and in 1994 Tasso’s moved to its third and current location at 84th and Wornall in Waldo.¹ The restaurant remains owned and operated by the Kalliris family, with son John Kalliris managing operations.¹

In 2010, the City of Kansas City honored the founder’s contributions by designating three city blocks as “Honorary Tasso Kalliris Street.”⁴ Founder Anastasios “Tasso” Kalliris died April 2, 2022, at age 90.⁵ The restaurant was voted “Best Greek Food” by Squire Magazine from 1980 through 2008.¹
