Texas Tom’s at 7th & Quindaro is a burger-and-everything stand in Kansas City, Kansas that carries one of the oldest fast-food names in the metro. Tom Nigro started Texas Tom’s in 1953 and had 26 of them around Kansas City when he sold in 1983; the survivors today are a scattered handful run by different operators, and this corner is one of two in KCK. The menu is the classic Texas Tom’s sprawl — burgers, tenderloins, Italian steak sandwiches, tacos and burritos, wings in a dozen sauces, chili cheese fries — served from 10 in the morning to 9 at night, seven days.

Description

The stand sits at the corner of North 7th Street and Quindaro Boulevard, north of downtown KCK, under the red-and-white Texas Tom’s signage that a January 2026 reviewer said “you could[n’t] live anywhere near KCK or KCMO without seeing” — he first ate at one in the 1970s.1 It is a carryout-first operation with a small dining area; Roadtrippers and Yahoo Local both file it as a casual burger restaurant with family-friendly amenities.21

The menu is the Texas Tom’s formula rather than a curated one: burgers, chicken tenderloins, Italian steak sandwiches, burritos and tacos, wings with sauce choices (garlic parmesan and sweet chili are the ones reviewers single out), chili cheese fries and, unusually for the neighborhood, a salad.12 Reviews from 2023 through 2026 praise portions and value; a 2024 reviewer, less impressed, called it “the only Texas Toms I know still exists,” which is wrong on the count but right about the feeling.1 No first-party menu or price list exists online; see Menu.

Ownership and history

The chain. Texas Tom’s was created by Tom Nigro in 1953. According to Northeast News publisher Michael Bushnell, quoted by The Pitch, the first one — at 8401 Winner Road — was conceived as an ice-cream shop and briefly carried the name Frigid Cream; by the time Nigro sold the business in 1983 there were 26 Texas Tom’s in and around the metro, two of them on Independence Avenue.3 The Linwood Boulevard store (709 E. Linwood, opened 1972) was long called the original; The Pitch reported its closing in January 2010, when 5522 Independence Avenue and 5401 Blue Parkway were the other units still open, and its reopening in March 2014 under Javaid and Arshad Chaudhri after four years dark.43 Ali Nazam, who runs the 6950 Prospect Avenue Texas Tom’s, opened a second at 3360 Troost in May 2015 and closed it in August, blaming competition from the Linwood store less than a mile away.56 The name, in other words, has for decades been carried by independent operators rather than a single company. Who bought the chain from Nigro in 1983 and how the name came to be used unit-by-unit is not documented in any source found.

KCK memory. A 2013 Yelp thread of Kansas Citians trading Texas Tom’s memories places former KCK units in Turner (near the old outdoor pool), at 38th & State Avenue (with an arcade — Galaga, Asteroids, Pac-Man), “on 7th Street by City Hall” and on Rainbow Boulevard, with Missouri units on Stadium Drive, Linwood, Independence Avenue and Blue Ridge; the Buckaroo Basket with its square lollipop, the tenderloins and the onion rings are the recurring items.7 Whether “7th Street by City Hall” is this corner (KCK City Hall is on N 7th Street, a short distance south) is plausible but unconfirmed.

This corner. The owner of the 7th & Quindaro store is not named in any source found, nor is its opening date; reviews run from at least May 2023.1 It is not the unit behind texastomsks.com, which belongs to the Leavenworth Road store.8

Other units open in 2026 (none with Registry pages yet): 709 E Linwood Blvd and 6950 Prospect Ave, Kansas City, MO (the latter with its own site); 5522 Independence Ave, Kansas City, MO (“Texas Tom’s Restaurants”); 10690 E US Hwy 40, Independence, MO.9101112

Not verified. No first-party website, ordering page or menu board for the 7th & Quindaro store was findable; the items above are drawn from reviewer descriptions, and prices are not recorded. The Leavenworth Road unit’s site lists the family’s standard categories (cheeseburgers, fried chicken, chili cheese tots, gyros, catfish baskets, Texan Burger, Taco Burger, Buffalo Chicken Fries, Philly cheesesteak, milkshakes), which is likely close to what is sold here.8
