The Better Cheddar has sold cheese and specialty foods in Kansas City since 1983, and still runs two rooms: the original on the Country Club Plaza at 604 W. 48th St. and a second at 5 On the Mall in the Prairie Village Shops. It was founded when Ron Shalinsky bought a small Kansas City sandwich shop in 1983; in 2003 the Specialty Food Association named it one of the top five specialty retailers in the country. Alongside the counter — American artisan and farmstead cheeses beside European selections — it sells accoutrements, imported foods, and priced virtual tasting kits through its own online store. Tier 1 — locally founded, four decades of KC tenure.12345

Description

A cheese counter that grew into a gourmet grocer. The shop’s own About page states its purpose as sourcing American artisan and farmstead cheeses alongside European selections, and frames the two rooms as a single Kansas City institution: “Since 1983, The Better Cheddar has been offering its wide selection of cheese and other specialty foods in two locations in the Kansas City area.”31

culture: the word on cheese (Nov 17, 2017) described it as a one-stop gourmet grocer carrying thousands of specialty products, with 150–200 cheeses in stock during holidays, and running classes and events.4

KCUR’s December 2025 cheese tour placed it first among KC cheese destinations — “The Better Cheddar has been Kansas City foodies’ go-to since 1983. This specialty emporium has everything you need, cheese-wise, as well a variety of accoutrements and imported foods” — and confirmed the two-location footprint as Country Club Plaza and Prairie Village Shops.5

Both rooms are in high-rent walkable shopping districts rather than industrial or market halls: the Plaza store sits a block off 48th Street’s retail spine (country-club-plaza) and the Kansas store in the Prairie Village Shops (prairie-village-ks).

Ownership and history

culture reports that Ron Shalinsky founded the business in 1983 by buying a small sandwich shop in Kansas City, and later opened the second store in Prairie Village. The magazine frames the timing against the 1980s growth in American artisanal cheesemaking — Shalinsky saw a need for shops that could showcase new wedges and wheels. It credits him with numerous awards, including being named an Outstanding Retailer in 2003 by the Specialty Food Association.4 The shop’s own About page states the same 2003 recognition in its own words: the Specialty Food Association honored the business as one of the top five retailers nationally.3

The Shalinsky attribution is sourced to a 2017 article. No current, resolvable source naming the owner as of 2026 was located this pass. Current ownership: “ — treat “founded by Ron Shalinsky in 1983” as the sourced claim and do not silently convert it into a present-tense ownership statement.

menu_status: partial. The cheese counter itself is not priced online — the shop publishes no per-pound cheese list, which is normal for a cut-to-order case. What it does publish first-party is a priced online store of virtual tasting kits, transcribed below from its own shop page (accessed 2026-08-13; several were marked sold out at the time). No aggregator pricing is used.6
