The Book Club is a bookshop-café on Johnson Drive in downtown Mission — “part bookstore, part café, and entirely created for connection” — opened in the fall of 2025 by Kimberly and Matthew Hoppock, the couple behind the gift shop Truly Madly Depot a few doors down. It took over the former Paulie D’s Pizza, soft-opened September 27, 2025 and threw its grand-opening party November 21. Matthew, an immigration attorney who paid his way through school as a barista and morning baker, runs a from-scratch kitchen — house focaccia and croissants for the paninis and sandwiches, a rotating bakery case, a breakfast burrito built on sausage from Werner’s across the street — while the shelves mix new releases, used books and staff picks; the shop buys and trades books and hosts book clubs and meet-ups.

Description

The shop is on the north side of Johnson Drive near Outlook Street, in the walkable stretch of downtown Mission that holds Fluffy Fresh Donuts, Mission Watch and Jewelry, Werner’s Fine Sausages across the street and, a few doors away, the owners’ first business, Truly Madly Depot.12 Its about page: “Our corner of Mission sits in a perfect pocket of the Kansas City metro. It is walkable, friendly, and full of regulars who know where to find the good stuff … The Book Club extends that same spirit into a space for reading, sipping, talking, and staying awhile.”3 The original plan called for books on the right side of the room and a bar with wine, espresso martinis and mimosas on the left; the shop opened as a coffee-and-lunch café first, with wine “planned for future service.”14

The kitchen is the surprise. “Everything here is baked in house from scratch,” the menu says, and the sandwich board is built on it: a Fig & Prosciutto Panini (house fig jam, brie, arugula on house focaccia), Turkey Pesto, Caprese Pesto and a Spicy Italian with nduja, fresh mozzarella and agrodolce onions, all $12; turkey-cheddar, chicken-salad and tuna-salad sandwiches on scratch-made croissants ($11–11.50); a grilled cheese on focaccia ($8.50); and the Burrito from the Block ($8), eggs, peppers, cheese and breakfast sausage “from our across-the-street neighbor, the iconic Werner’s Fine Sausages.”2 Sandwiches come with a pickle and chips or house pasta salad; small plates are hummus, chicken salad or tuna salad with crackers and vegetables.2 Muffins, scones and danishes rotate on a published weekly schedule (chocolate espresso muffin, blueberry citrus scone, strawberry danish and so on).2 The Pitch’s Sarah Sipple singled out the tuna-salad croissant “with arugula and tomato” at $9.50 and a 16-ounce hot chocolate at $5.25 in November 2025, and noted the shop gives away grilled-cheese sandwiches from 2 to 6 p.m. to anyone in need.5

Coffee is “thoughtfully sourced” and rotates: Matthew Hoppock told The Pitch he buys single-source beans that change regularly and cups them monthly, with an ambition to roast in-house at a separate Mission facility.46 The drink list runs drip ($2.75), cold brew brewed 18 hours ($3.75), espresso, cortado, cappuccino, lattes ($4.25–6.75), house-made chai, ceremonial matcha, London Fog, hot chocolate with house ganache and hot tea, with house syrups (vanilla, caramel, mocha, lavender honey, salted bourbon butterscotch, cardamom, hazelnut, brown sugar).2

On the book side: new releases, staff favorites, children’s books, used books and classics, journals and small gifts; the shop buys and trades used books and takes local-author submissions through its site.74 Events have included book clubs, junk-journal meet-ups, singles events and “trinket swaps.”46

Ownership and history

Kimberly and Matthew Hoppock are longtime Mission residents. Matthew is a full-time immigration attorney who “worked his way through college and law school doing many things, including pulling espresso shots and waking up before dawn as a morning baker,” and “has always dreamed of opening a coffee shop or bakery”; Kimberly “brings a background in design and marketing.”34 Their first shop, Truly Madly Depot — journals, cards, jewelry, Japanese stationery — opened on Johnson Drive in early 2024 and was voted The Pitch’s Best Gift Shop of 2025.15 Jenny Kane, Truly Madly Depot’s operations manager, was part of the Book Club launch team.1

In December 2024 the Johnson County Post reported the couple’s plan for a “boozy bookstore cafe” in the former Paulie D’s Pizza, which had operated in the space for about five years before closing in November 2024. “The location was just a no-brainer — it just made good sense,” Matthew said; the target was February 2025.1 Shelf Awareness, the bookselling trade newsletter, picked up the story in January.8 The build-out ran most of a year. The Book Club soft-opened Saturday, September 27, 2025 — “It’s a space for food, for conversation, for reading … a space for community,” Kimberly told The Pitch — and the Star covered the opening on October 1.469 A grand-opening party followed on Friday, November 21, 2025, 5 to 9 p.m., announced on the shop’s Instagram the week before; “Yesterday’s grand opening was everything I imagined and so much more,” the shop’s Facebook posted the next day.1011 The City of Mission lists the business in its directory under Retail, Food + Drink and Woman Owned.12
