The Classic Cup Cafe is the Country Club Plaza’s longest-running independent restaurant — a breakfast-and-lunch room at the corner of 47th and Central with floor-to-ceiling windows on 47th Street, a sidewalk patio in front and a second patio behind. The Classic Cup name dates to 1977 in Westport, where Dan and Charlene Welling grew a packaged-coffee shop into a restaurant; the Plaza location opened in 1989 and has changed hands twice, most recently to Dan McCall, its former general manager, who also owns District Pour House. Since late 2018 it has closed at 2 p.m., giving its evenings over to private events in the cellar and upstairs rooms. Expect eggs Benedict, a smoked-brisket hash, buttermilk griddle cakes and a colossal cinnamon roll, and — on a warm morning — the best people-watching table on the Plaza.

Description

The Classic Cup occupies the ground floor of the 47th Street block between Central and Broadway, with “floor-to-ceiling windows along high-traffic 47th street” and “a popular sidewalk patio in front and in back — both huge draws during warm weather,” as KCUR put it in 2023.1 Feast’s 2016 visit found black linen napkins, bench seating along the window wall, tile floors that bounce conversation, and a room two-thirds full by 9 a.m. on a snowy Saturday.2 The Pitch’s Charles Ferruzza, reviewing in 2005, called the sidewalk tables “dinner theater” and the restaurant “one of the very few independents left on the Plaza,” with regulars who “get downright defensive” on its behalf — “It’s a Kansas City institution.”3

Breakfast is served all day. The current menu runs from a Colossal Cinnamon Roll ($8) and Famous Buttermilk Griddle Cakes with Webster City bacon ($15) through a Smoked Brisket Hash with poached eggs and “zesty bloody mary sauce” ($17), Migas, a Scimeca’s-sausage Sicilian Omelette, a Vegetable Omelette built on Campo Lindo eggs and locally harvested oyster mushrooms, the Classic and Pacific Northwest (smoked salmon) Benedicts, biscuits and gravy, quiche Lorraine and a Bronx Deli Breakfast of True Cuts bratwurst and Boyle’s pastrami on a Kaiser bun.4 Lunch adds a half-pound Kansas wagyu Classic Burger, low-country shrimp and grits, hot-honey chicken and waffle, pork-belly carbonara, a Cup Club on house focaccia, mac and cheese, a snapper club, and the Thai Chicken Wrap — a descendant of the Thai chicken pizza that, Charlene Welling once admitted to Ferruzza, she had adapted from California Pizza Kitchen.43 KC Magazine’s 2024 breakfast roundup called the brisket hash “crispy,” the poached eggs “perfectly cooked,” and the whole “the perfect combination of spicy, sweet and savory.”5 KCUR’s 2025 Plaza guide: “This brunch staple feels like a neighborhood happening … The woodwork, mosaic tile floor and sidewalk patio remain inviting — a morning ritual for many, ‘classic’ in name and spirit.”6

The site describes the private room — “mosaic marble floor, hand-rubbed cherry wine racks, Straus crystal chandeliers, and imported Italian chairs” — with its own kitchen and staff for groups of 10 to 75; the menu page adds the “Classic Cellar” and the main dining room and patios as bookable for weddings, rehearsal dinners and corporate events, with plated brunch, buffet and dinner menus.74

Ownership and history

The Classic Cup began in Westport, where Dan and Charlene Welling grew “a tiny place that sold only packaged coffee, mugs and candies” into a restaurant that ran 25 years and closed in 2001; by the mid-1980s it drew “an interesting blend of attractive young bohemians and well-appointed society types.”3 The brand’s own dating is “since 1977.”78 The Plaza location opened in 1989 (Feast) — Ferruzza in 2005 called it “the 15-year-old Plaza location” — and the Wellings sold it in 1993 (The Pitch) or 1992 (Feast, “current ownership since 1992,” which is also the year the house coffee blend was developed).23 The restaurant’s signature braided loaf of rye, whole wheat and white doughs came over from Westport only because customers demanded it, Welling told Ferruzza; chef Michael Turner had run the kitchen “for years” as of 2005.3

In February 2016 Feast identified the owner as John Meyer, who said weekday breakfast drew about 80 percent regulars, “plenty of government officials,” and that the café had been named Kansas City’s “best business breakfast.”2 Dan McCall — described by The Pitch in September 2013 as “a manager for the Classic Cup and Coach’s Bar & Grill” who “lives with Meyer-McCall in Waldo,” and who took Classic Cup chef John Magno with him to open District Pour House + Kitchen at 7122 Wornall with partner Jason Rourke — is identified as the Classic Cup’s owner by KSHB in May 2020, KCUR in November 2023 and Flatland in July 2024.910111 When and how ownership passed from Meyer to McCall is not documented in any source retrieved here; the shared Meyer surname suggests a family transfer.

In late 2018 the restaurant dropped dinner service, “saying most of its business was daytime”; McCall told KCUR in 2023 that private events upstairs and downstairs “three to four nights a week” were “more lucrative to staff the restaurant during,” and that low evening foot traffic was “one of the reasons we are closed at night.”111 Closed by the pandemic in spring 2020, the café used its kitchen with Operation BBQ Relief and an AT&T sponsorship to turn out about 14,500 meals a day for people in need, using District Pour House’s earlier reopening “as a model,” and reopened to the public on June 3, 2020.10 In July 2024 McCall told Flatland the Plaza’s new Dallas-based owners’ emphasis on security “feels like it is positive,” and that “the Plaza has to change to bring in more people” — even if that meant redevelopment of his own block.11
