The Fix is a plant-based comfort-food restaurant near 31st and Gillham/Cherry on the edge of Union Hill in midtown Kansas City, opened in January 2020 by owner Dave Swarts — a longtime KC plant-based advocate and the producer of VegFest Kansas City.

Description

The Fix is a fully plant-based restaurant serving vegan comfort food in midtown Kansas City, located at 600 E 31st Street near the 31st-and-Gillham edge of the Union Hill neighborhood (the space is also described in press coverage as “31st and Cherry”).¹ The menu centers on familiar comfort dishes rendered without animal products — items reviewers single out include a Nashville Hot Chik’n sandwich, smothered biscuit, loaded fries, and cauliflower wings — alongside a popular weekend plant-based brunch.²

Owner Dave Swarts has deliberately positioned the restaurant around accessibility rather than the “vegan” label, framing it as “a restaurant that serves comfort food” meant to welcome plant-based eaters and the vegan-curious alike.³ The restaurant is independently owned and operates a single location.¹

Ownership and history

The Fix was opened in January 2020 by Dave Swarts, in the former Attitude restaurant space in midtown Kansas City.³⁴ As a first-time restaurateur, Swarts (who also has a background in commercial real estate and handles much of the baking himself) built out a kitchen team to run the operation.⁴

Swarts is a fixture of Kansas City’s plant-based and animal-advocacy community: he serves as executive director of the nonprofit VegLife KC and is the producer of VegFest Kansas City, the city’s annual plant-based food and lifestyle festival.³⁴ He has said his preference for plant-based eating stems from his love of animals and advocacy against animal cruelty, and that he wanted to create a place where anyone could find a good meal regardless of their eating preferences.⁴ The restaurant opened just before the COVID-19 pandemic and built early momentum through its plant-based brunch.⁴ The Fix is also described in recent listings as veteran-owned.
