The Geekery is an independent game and hobby store at 12616 W 62nd Terrace, Suite 117, in Shawnee, Kansas, trading as the Kansas limited liability company The Geekery, LLC. It sells miniature wargames, trading-card games, role-playing books, dice, paints and hobby supplies, and runs a play space that carries a seven-nights-a-week event calendar — Warhammer 40,000, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh, Marvel: Crisis Protocol, Judgement, Flesh and Blood, Digimon, Lorcana, Union Arena and more. Unlike some of its metro peers it is squarely in the trading-card business: it sells Magic singles, sealed and Commander product, and buys cards over a value threshold at TCGplayer market prices. It is a WPN Premium store in the Wizards of the Coast retailer network, and it hosts the annual Perils of the Geekery Warhammer 40,000 grand tournament.
Description
The Geekery sells itself in one line on its own home page: “Your nerd getaway. Hobby, Paint, Play.”1 The store occupies Suite 117 of an office-and-retail building at 12616 W 62nd Terrace in Shawnee, a Johnson County suburb west of the state line, and it is the only Shawnee entry on the Role-Players Guild of Kansas City’s local-game-store roster.12
The retail floor is organised around four things the store puts front and centre on its own navigation: Warhammer 40,000, Magic: The Gathering, Marvel: Crisis Protocol and Judgement: Eternal Champions, plus paint, hobby supplies, card supplies and Dungeons & Dragons.1 The online catalogue is broader than the marquee — Warhammer 30,000 and Games Workshop specialist games, BattleTech, Flesh and Blood, Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon, KeyForge, UniVersus, WizKids figures, RPG books, dice sets, and paint from Citadel, Vallejo, The Army Painter and Scale 75.3 Its own paint pitch names the same brands and adds Two Thin Coats: stock “perfect for taking your models from a pile of shame to the battlefield or display case.”1
Where the store draws a line is on buying, not selling. It publishes a card-buying policy — “We do not currently purchase bulk cards. Standard cards must be valued at over $2, and non-standard cards must be valued at over $5… Our buying prices are based on TCGplayer market prices” — and a parallel one for miniatures: sell your unbuilt backlog for store credit or cash, and buy from a previously-owned section at 50% off retail.1 This distinguishes it sharply from TableTop Game & Hobby in Overland Park, whose founder built that store around not doing collectible cards at all. The Geekery’s Magic business is real: the Lightspeed store carries Singles, Booster Packs, Commander Product and Pre Constructed as separate categories, and the store is a WPN Premium member of the Wizards of the Coast retailer network.34
Two services fill out the model. The Loyal Minion Program, described first-party as “our longest-running service,” is a loyalty subscription that takes 10% off at checkout.1 Locker rental — $7.50 a month for a small locker sized to a Battle Foam 720 bag, $15 for a large sized to a 1520 — is aimed at “wargamers who don’t want to carry their army around all day, or card game players at tournaments who need secure storage for their valuables.” Renters supply their own lock and leave a spare key with the store; there is a signed agreement form and no automatic recurring charge.15 The store also sells cold drinks, snacks and hot food, and says outright that customers may bring their own.1
The play space is the reason the calendar is dense. The store’s own September 2026 events grid ran an event every single day of the month, with a stable weekly spine: Monday 40K/GW Game Night and Hololive TCG; Tuesday Yu-Gi-Oh Advanced; Wednesday MTG Commander Game Night and Wednesday Night Legacy; Thursday Marvel: Crisis Protocol Game Night, YuGiOh Genesys Tournament and Flesh and Blood Tournament; Friday Judgement: Eternal Champions and Disney Lorcana League Night; Saturday competitive tournaments including 40K, Digimon and MTG Pauper; Sunday Union Arena Locals, Yu-Gi-Oh Edison and Shadowverse.6 Several Saturdays carried five to seven additional listings the calendar view collapsed behind a “more” link.6
Above the weeklies sit named tournaments. Perils of the Geekery is the store’s Warhammer 40,000 grand tournament; the fourth edition ran 12–13 April 2025 at the store address.7 The store also posts monthly 40K tournaments and drew 38 players to its first 11th-edition 40K event.7 Judgement play at the shop is rated on the Longshanks tournament platform — “January Geekery Judgement,” 25 January 2025, six players.8 Going further back, the official BattleTech forums carry a 25 August 2019 announcement for a BattleTech tournament at the store, posted by a Catalyst Demo Team agent.9
This page is not The Geekery SLC (Salt Lake City), Geekery Games, or the personal Instagram account @thegeekeryonline; and it is not Level One Game Shop in the Kansas City, Missouri City Market or TableTop Game & Hobby in Overland Park, the two other KC-metro tabletop stores already in the Registry.2
Ownership and history
The owner’s full name was not located this pass. Yelp’s business-owner attribution on the store’s listing reads “Meet the Business Owner: EJ H”, and Yelp reviewers refer to “E.J.” as the person behind the counter.10 No first-party page names an owner: the website carries no About or team page, and the site’s only human-facing contact is a Gmail address and a phone number.1 The SBA’s Paycheck Protection Program records for the entity report an individually owned business — race White, ethnicity not Hispanic or Latino, male owned, non-veteran — with 3 jobs retained.11 Together these establish owner-operation and a single individual owner, but not a name.
The legal entity is The Geekery, LLC, a Kansas limited liability company. The name appears first-party in the Lightspeed storefront’s own branding (the-geekery-llc.shoplightspeed.com, page title “The Geekery LLC”) and in the federal loan record, which files it under both “The Geekery LLC” and “The Geekery, LLC” at 12616 W 62nd Ter Ste 117, NAICS 423920 (Toy and Hobby Goods and Supplies Merchant Wholesalers).311 A mirror of Kansas business-entity data gives the entity number as 8928046, type KANSAS LTD LIABILITY COMPANY, status ACTIVE AND IN GOOD STANDING, formation 2 September 2018, with the resident agent being the LLC itself at the store’s own suite — i.e. no outside agent service and no other party of record.12 That mirror could not be independently re-fetched (see Current standing), and the Kansas Secretary of State’s own search returned HTTP 403.
The founding year is unresolved, and the sources are printed here rather than merged.
- 2014. Yelp’s business listing states “Established in 2014. Opened November 12th.” That text is owner-supplied on Yelp and is the only place a specific opening date was found.10
- 2018. The Kansas LLC’s formation date is 2 September 2018, four years later.12
- Pre-April 2018. The store’s first PPP application, approved 28 April 2020, reports business age as “Existing or more than 2 years old” — which places the business’s start no later than April 2018 and is compatible with either reading.11
- August 2019. The earliest independently dated third-party evidence of the store operating at all is the BattleTech forum announcement of 25 August 2019.9
The reconciliation this page does not assert but flags for a later pass: an LLC formed in 2018 is entirely consistent with a business that opened in 2014 under a different structure — a sole proprietorship or an earlier entity — and later reorganised. No source confirming that was located, so both dates stand unresolved above rather than being stitched together. The 2014 date is the one the business itself publishes; the 2018 date is the one the state record carries.
Relocation history: none found. Every source located this pass — first-party, federal, retailer-network and directory — places the business at 12616 W 62nd Ter, Suite 117, including the 2020 PPP record.11141314 No earlier address surfaced, and no move was reported anywhere. This is an absence of evidence, not evidence of absence.
The pandemic record is documented. The Geekery, LLC took two PPP loans through The Central Trust Bank: $11,200 approved 28 April 2020 (loan #6469517206) and $13,432 approved 23 March 2021 (loan #7133178600). Both are reported by the SBA as “Paid in Full” — a status that covers both repayment and full forgiveness. Both applications reported 3 jobs retained and proceeds allocated entirely to payroll.11
Network standing has been earned over time. The store is a WPN Premium member of the Wizards of the Coast Store & Event Locator (store ID 5988) — the higher of the network’s two published tiers — and one of only three WPN Premium stores inside a 10-mile radius of its own address.4 It is a listed store for Riot Games’ Riftbound under the Physical Retailer / Organized Play designation, and it appears on the store roster of the Role-Players Guild of Kansas City, the metro’s tabletop nonprofit.152
No press coverage of the business — Shawnee Mission Post, Johnson County Post, The Kansas City Star, KCUR, Startland or Visit KC — was located this pass. The only editorial listing found is a KC Parent venue entry filed under Board Games & RPG / Indoor / Johnson County.16
