The Phoenix is a historic jazz bar, restaurant, and live-music room at 302 W 8th St in Downtown Kansas City’s Garment District, occupying the ground floor of the 1888 Phoenix Hotel building. The saloon lineage on the site dates to 1905 (the Valerius Saloon), and the venue took its current form as a jazz bar and eatery in 1990. It is one of the longest-running live-jazz rooms in the heart of downtown, programming jazz, blues, and live music roughly six nights a week plus a Sunday jazz brunch. It is locally owned and independent — and is not connected to John Scott’s Green Lady Lounge / Black Dolphin, which is a separate Crossroads operation.123

Description

The Phoenix is a Downtown Kansas City jazz bar, restaurant, and live-music venue at 302 W 8th Street, in the Garment District corner of downtown. It occupies the ground floor of the historic Phoenix Hotel building, constructed in 1888 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.1 The venue bills itself as one of the oldest jazz-and-blues rooms in the heart of downtown, presenting live music roughly six nights a week along with a Sunday jazz brunch.14

Beyond the music, The Phoenix operates as a full restaurant and bar, with a New American / classic comfort menu; local press has characterized it as a place where “classic comfort and musical versatility” meet, with the staff and hospitality experience treated as central to its identity.2 It is a recurring fixture on Kansas City “where to see live jazz” guides, placing it within the city’s living jazz scene alongside rooms like the Green Lady Lounge, the Blue Room, and the Majestic.5

Ownership and history

The site’s hospitality lineage is unusually deep. According to the venue’s own history, the establishment began in 1905 as the “Valerius Saloon,” named for proprietor Frank Valerius, whose name remains etched in the stained glass above the front door. Around 1920, Valerius sold to Madame Linna Laws, who lived upstairs and rented rooms on the second and third floors while the ground floor continued serving food and drink. The building itself — the Phoenix Hotel — dates to 1888 and carries National Register status.13

After passing through different proprietors over the decades, the business “transformed into what it resembles today” in 1990, becoming the jazz bar and eatery it is now.12 This 1990 date is the most consistently cited origin for the modern Phoenix as a live-jazz room; some directory listings instead give “established 1980,” and the seed value of “2005” appears to be incorrect.

The Phoenix is locally owned and independent. The most prominent named figure in recent press is Carisa Lynch (“Cola”), described as the venue’s general manager rather than its owner.2 The current owner of record is not documented in available public sources.

On the John Scott question: John Scott is the owner of the Green Lady Lounge (1809 Grand) and Black Dolphin in the Crossroads, where his rooms feature original Kansas City jazz compositions. Available sources show no ownership or operational connection between Scott and The Phoenix — they are separate downtown-area jazz operations under different ownership. The earlier open question on the Green Lady / Black Dolphin pages can be resolved: Scott is not connected to The Phoenix.67
