The Sentinel Room is a whiskey bar and craft cocktail lounge on Independence Square, opened March 9, 2024 by Bree and Travis Gensler — Bree a born-and-raised Independence native with multi-generational family roots on the Square, Travis a longtime Independence insurance operator — and named after the Independence Sentinel newspaper whose editorial offices once occupied the same building.1

Description

The Sentinel Room occupies a century-old commercial building at 208 W Lexington Ave on the west side of Independence Square, in the same space that once housed the editorial offices of the Independence Sentinel newspaper. Owners Bree and Travis Gensler purchased the building four years before opening the bar, first operating an adjacent retail shop, The Marinello — named after a 1930s business previously in the space — before debuting The Sentinel Room in March 2024.2

The venue is composed of three spaces: a speakeasy-style main cocktail bar with dark leather seating and dim lighting, an adjacent Whiskey Library housing over 1,168 expressions available by the pour or by the bottle, and The Marinello retail shop. The bar’s signature claim is the country’s largest Old Fashioned menu, alongside handcrafted cocktails and a small food menu of charcuterie boards and flatbread pizzas. Prices typically run $12–$15 per drink.34

The room’s identity is anchored in local journalism history: the brand’s mascot — a mustachioed rabbit in a monocle — was drawn from an April 15, 1899 newspaper advertisement the Genslers discovered in the archives of the Jackson County Historical Society, originally copyrighted 1897. The bar also runs the Sentinel Spirit Series, pairing distillery partners with local charity fundraising, and Collective 33, a members’ club with monthly curated pours and exclusive access.12

Owner background

Bree Gensler was born and raised in Independence, with family ties spanning multiple generations on and around the historic Square — the Square has been part of her upbringing her entire life. Travis Gensler operated an insurance agency in downtown Independence for 13 years before opening the bar. Together they purchased the Lexington Avenue building around 2020, initially to preserve and steward the historic commercial space, opening The Marinello retail shop before converting the adjacent unit into The Sentinel Room.21

The bar takes its name and visual identity from the Independence Sentinel, the newspaper that previously operated in the space in the early 1900s. Travis’s signature cocktail, “The Don,” is named after his uncle and based on his uncle’s original recipe.2
