Domain note: a domain, toainternationalmarkets.com, was registered for the business and now returns a hosting “Account Suspended” page rather than a site.1 A separate and unrelated business, Tour of African International Food Market of Lewis Center, Ohio, trades at tourofafricanintfoodmarket.com; search results mix the two, and nothing on the Ohio store’s site describes this one.2
Description
Tour of Africa is a full-line African and Caribbean grocery. The clearest inventory record is the set of captioned photographs the business supplied to its own listings, which read as a working shelf map:34
Starches and flours. Pounded yam, fufu flour, banku flour, amala flour, cassava fufu, bulgur wheat, peanut flour, beans and peanut. Rice across the range African households actually buy — parboiled, jasmine, basmati.
Oils and fats. Liberia water oil (palm oil) — named on the store’s own photo caption in the Liberian idiom rather than the generic one, which is itself a signal about who the store is stocking for.
Seasoning. Jerk seasoning, hot sauce, waakye leaves (the Ghanaian dried sorghum leaf that colours the rice-and-beans dish of the same name), Tola, ground anise, Old Bay, Aji-No-Moto, Maggi cubes, cayenne seasoning.
Fresh produce. Plantain, yam, fresh cassava, onion.
Non-food. African dress and costume, creams and cosmetics, shoes, drinks, movies and jewelry.5
The Caribbean half of the name is not decorative — jerk seasoning and Heinz pork and beans sit alongside the West African staples, and a visiting reviewer singled out exactly that mixture: “they sell a lot of products unavailable in the States. Heinz pork and beans and fufu flour galore.”3
Why the location matters. Almost all of the metro’s African retail sits on the Independence Avenue corridor, with ivoire-african-market in Waldo as the southern exception. Tour of Africa is the northern exception. A Northland household that would otherwise drive twenty minutes each way to the Avenue can shop at N Oak instead, and the store is reachable on a KCATA bus line.
Ownership and history
The owner’s name is not published in any source located, and is not asserted here — “. Reviewer accounts refer to staff and to “the owner” without naming anyone. No incorporation record, press profile or chamber listing naming a principal was found. The Registry does not infer an owner’s name or nationality from a store’s name.
What is documented is a relocation. In January 2023 the business’s own posts gave its address as 2313 Route 291, Independence, Missouri 64057, with hours of 8:30 AM–8:00 PM Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays, EBT accepted, and delivery through DoorDash and Uber Eats.5 Every current listing places it at 6819 N Oak Trafficway with slightly extended hours and a Sunday opening.34 The store therefore moved from eastern Jackson County to the Northland at some point after early 2023; the date and the reason are “.
The 2023 posts also advertised freshly cooked African food made to order alongside the retail stock, and described snacks made in-house — polow in Liberian usage, chin-chin in Nigerian.5 Whether that prepared-food side survived the move is unconfirmed; see Menu.
Menu
menu_status: unverified.
Tour of Africa is primarily a retail grocery, which would normally make this na. It is not marked na because the business’s own January 2023 posts advertised freshly cooked African food and house-made snacks (polow / chin-chin) sold alongside the shelves, and a current listing still records catering among its services.53 Whether a prepared-food counter operates at the N Oak Trafficway address today is not established.
No prices are recorded on this page. No first-party menu, posted board photograph, or own ordering page was located. Delivery-platform listings were not used: the store advertised DoorDash and Uber Eats availability in 2023, and platform prices run well above in-store prices, so the Registry does not carry them.
A visit should establish (a) whether hot food is served at the current address, (b) what the dish list is, and (c) in-store prices from the posted board.
