Tasty African Food KC is a family-owned West African (Liberian) restaurant in Overland Park, Kansas, opened in February 2026 by Liberian-born childhood friends Abertha Reeves and Florence Muni after about a year running a Kansas City, Kansas ghost kitchen — known for Liberian jollof rice, palm butter and goat stew, egusi with fufu, suya skewers, and house-made juices and lemonades.
Description
Tasty African Food KC is a family-owned African restaurant at 11240 W 135th Street in Overland Park, Kansas, near the intersection of 135th Street and Nieman Road (close to Slow Rise Doughnuts and TurnStyles Thrift). The owners describe the menu as “Afrocentric,” anchored in West African — and specifically Liberian — cooking while also offering some East African dishes.
The menu centers on dishes the owners grew up eating in Liberia. Signature and frequently cited items include Liberian jollof rice, palm butter stew, goat stew, egusi soup served with fufu, suya skewers, African chicken wings, fish, chicken patties (meat pies), collard greens, samosas, and sweet ripe plantains. The kitchen also makes in-house beverages, including several flavors of crafted lemonade and hibiscus juice, plus desserts such as mango mousse and butter pecan cake. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are noted on the official site. The restaurant offers dine-in, online carryout, and delivery.
Posted hours: closed Monday; Tuesday–Saturday roughly 11 a.m.–9 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m.–8 p.m. (some listings show later Friday/Saturday close times).
Ownership and history
Tasty African Food KC is owned and operated by Abertha Reeves and Florence Muni, two childhood friends originally from Liberia whose friendship spans more than a decade. The two turned a shared passion for cooking traditional Liberian dishes into a business, first building a customer base through catering and by bringing homemade lunches to work, which generated demand for their food.
Before opening the Overland Park storefront, the owners ran a ghost kitchen for roughly a year off 24th Street and Lamar Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. They opened the brick-and-mortar location in Overland Park in late February 2026.
Shortly after opening, the restaurant struggled to attract customers — in part because of an incorrect address listed on Google Maps. In March 2026, Davis Roethler (owner of a local window-cleaning service, Window Wolf) featured the restaurant on social media as part of an effort to spotlight local businesses; the post went viral, drove a sharp increase in traffic, and the publicity helped get the restaurant’s Google address corrected. Local and national coverage followed (Johnson County Post, Fox4 KC, AOL, iHeart stations).
