Two Sugars Coffee (Westport)

Two Sugars Coffee is a bright, patio-fronted coffee shop and bakery at 1412 Westport Road, on the seam between Westport and the West Plaza. Victoria Rickart-Pontin, who grew up working in her mother’s Excelsior Springs restaurant and studied in France and London, opened it in October 2022 around house-made pastries and flavored lattes; KCUR’s food critics called it “maybe the best kept coffee secret in KC.” In 2025 she sold the business to new owners, Kat and Robert (Robert Armstrong, per a Rotary club listing), who kept the name, the scratch bakery and the 7-to-3 daily hours, and expanded with a second Two Sugars in a renovated camper on Troost Avenue (see two-sugars-coffee-beacon-hill).

Description

Two Sugars occupies a small storefront with a large front window and a front patio at 1412 Westport Road, a block west of Southwest Trafficway where Westport Road runs into the West Plaza.¹² The Pitch’s Tiffany Watts, visiting in February 2025, found “abundant natural light from a large front window, cozy-yet-chic décor” and enough seating “to work or catch up with friends,” and noted the shop does not carry decaf; the owner was behind the counter that morning and finished her latte with a heart.² KCUR’s 2024 coffee round-up called it “maybe the best kept coffee secret in KC. There’s a fabulous patio and even more delectable pastries.”³

The pastry case is the point. The founder’s opening-era list ran to croissants, “spice bites,” coconut cake, muffins and cookies including snickerdoodles and a vegan “blueberry knockout.”¹ The current online menu lists cinnamon rolls ($5.50), scones ($4.55), muffins ($4.00) and sugar cookies ($3.50) alongside bacon-egg-and-cheese ($8.75) and egg-and-cheese ($7.75) breakfast sandwiches on everything bagels, and a rotating board of flavored lattes — Cookie Butter, Bananas Foster, Oatmeal Cream Pie, Brown Sugar Bliss, Werther’s Original — at $7.50, with drip at $3.50–3.75 and a strawberry-vanilla green tea at $3.75.⁴ Reviewers on joe.coffee’s Google feed repeatedly mention the Werther’s caramel latte and the sugar cookie.⁵ The shop’s Instagram bio says it pours Hammerhand Coffee beverages and sells local art.⁶

The name, per the founder, refers to two scoops of sugar in tea.¹

Ownership and history

Victoria Rickart-Pontin founded Two Sugars. She was 14 when she started working at Ventana Gourmet Grill, the Excelsior Springs restaurant owned by her mother and her aunt; she later lived in France to study the language and moved to London for a master’s degree in marketing at the University of Greenwich before returning to Kansas City.¹ The Kansas City Star’s Joyce Smith previewed the shop in the fall of 2022 as a place with house-made pastries that “aims to be ‘a fun place to go,’” with opening hours of 7:30 a.m.–2 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.¹ Two Sugars opened on October 5, 2022; a family member’s Facebook post announced “TWO SUGARS COFFEE is OPEN! 1412 Westport Rd. Come see us! Victoria Rickart-Pontin the owner!”⁷⁸ By early 2025 the shop had moved to seven-day service from 7 to 3.²⁹

In 2025 Rickart-Pontin sold the business. The shop’s Instagram announced: “Exciting things are happening at Two Sugars! Today your new owners Kat and Robert took over and couldn’t be more thrilled to be serving the Kansas City community amazing coffee.”¹⁰ The commercial brokerage that handled the deal, Retail Storefronts / Select Sites Commercial Real Estate, posted that “Two Sugars Coffee has new owners and will be staying in Midtown … they’ve also expanded with a second location in Beacon Hill at 2501 Troost.”¹¹ The Kansas City Plaza Rotary Club identifies “Club Member Robert Armstrong” as the proprietor of “his business, Two Sugars Coffee at Beacon Hill,” which is the only surname in the record; Kat’s surname and the pair’s backgrounds are not documented.¹² A Yelp reviewer wrote that the shop “changed ownership last year” and that the “new owners have made this more of a chill coffee house and it really works.”¹³

The new owners kept the name, staff-facing branding, bakery program and hours, and within months had opened the second location in the former Vested Coffee camper on Troost (grand opening October 1, 2025) — see two-sugars-coffee-beacon-hill.¹¹¹⁴
