Union on the Hill is a chef-owned New American restaurant in the historic Union Hill neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, opened in late 2022 / early 2023 by veteran KC chef George Atsangbe — a 40-year restaurant-industry hand and a native of Nigeria — who built it as an upscale-feeling dining room at affordable prices.¹²³

Description

Union on the Hill is “a lively restaurant located in the heart of the historic Union Hill,” serving an All-American menu with “a classy, fun, and modern twist.”¹ The dining room seats roughly 110 and features a contemporary interior and a full bar with cocktails, wine, and beer.³ The menu leans New American with a seafood emphasis — filet meatloaf, hanger steak, crispy/caveman chicken, lobster rolls, flatbreads, artisan salads, udon bowls, and artichoke carbonara — with a Sunday brunch including chicken & waffles and shrimp + grits.²³⁴ The restaurant offers a 10% discount to Union Hill residents and participates in KC Restaurant Week.³⁵

Ownership and history

Union on the Hill is owned by chef George Atsangbe, a native of Nigeria with roughly 40 years in the Kansas City restaurant world, including corporate-chef roles at Houlihan’s and Bread & Butter Concepts.²³ He also operates the Happy Belly food truck — launched by Bread & Butter during the pandemic — and many Union on the Hill dishes trace back to that truck’s menu.²³ Atsangbe opened Union on the Hill on the ground floor of the Union Hill apartment development at 2976 Gillham Rd in December 2022 / January 2023, framing it as his first venture into restaurant ownership.²³ His stated concept: “I had worked at higher end restaurants and I wanted a place where you could come with the feel of an expensive place, but affordable.”³
