Verdant

Verdant is a botanical gift store and florist in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District, founded around 2019–2020 by Chentell Shannon as the curated retail offshoot of her West Bottoms ceramics studio, Convivial (convivial-production). The shop pairs tropical houseplants and fresh/dried flowers with Convivial’s handmade planters and ceramics, plus candles, garden tools, greeting cards, and gifts. Verdant has become the brand’s public-facing storefront and primary e-commerce front — shopconvivial.com now redirects to shopverdant.com — and has since added a second Morningside location.¹²³⁴

Verdant is a botanical gift store in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District. The shop curates tropical and houseplants, fresh and dried flowers (with same-day pickup and delivery, pre-orders, and floral workshops), and handcrafted ceramics — candles, vases, and planters — alongside garden tools, accessories, greeting cards, and gift cards.²³⁴

The shop’s defining concept is the pairing of living plants and flowers with handmade pottery: the planters and ceramic goods sold at Verdant are designed and made by Convivial (convivial-production), Chentell Shannon’s ceramics design-and-manufacturing studio in the Historic West Bottoms.¹⁵ Verdant functions as the retail and consumer-facing extension of that maker brand; the company’s primary e-commerce now runs under the Verdant storefront, with shopconvivial.com issuing a redirect to shopverdant.com.⁴⁵

The flagship is in the Crossroads at 128 W 18th St, in the Monogram building (the former YJ’s Snack Bar space).¹ A second location has since opened in Morningside Plaza near Brookside, at 647 E 59th St, Kansas City, MO 64110.³ Both locations operate daily, 10 AM–7 PM, sharing the phone line (816) 295-8775.²³

Ownership and history

Verdant is owned by Chentell Shannon (née Stiritz), the founder and lead designer of Convivial, the West Bottoms ceramics studio she started in 2013–2014.¹⁵ Verdant was Shannon’s first retail venture: an outgrowth of Convivial’s planter and garden line, conceived as a way to sell living plants in the studio’s pottery and broaden the brand into a consumer storefront.¹⁵

Founding date carries a minor discrepancy across sources. A February 2019 Flatland KC report announced the shop with a planned May 1, 2019 opening at 128 W 18th St.¹ Other coverage describes Verdant as opening in the fall of 2020 after being conceptualized in 2018.²³ The most likely reconciliation is that the venture was conceived in 2018, with an initial Crossroads opening in 2019 and a relaunch/expansion of the concept around 2020 (the period in which it became the brand’s primary storefront and e-commerce front).

Shannon is originally from Hawaii (Maui) and studied art in the Chicago area (Wheaton College), where she met her husband, Stephen Shannon, a Kansas City native; the couple relocated to Kansas City — Stephen’s hometown — around 2013, where Chentell built Convivial and then Verdant.¹⁵
