Virgil’s Plant Shop is a houseplant retailer in Kansas City’s Longfellow neighborhood (Midtown KCMO), founded by KC native Reba Hamilton in 2019. It began as a mobile shop operating out of a converted forest-green mini school bus — “the plant bus” — before opening a permanent storefront at 2763 Cherry Street in 2021. The shop specializes in common and rare tropical and arid houseplants and expanded in 2024 with an adjacent arid-plant room, “Virgil’s Palm Springs.” It is named after Hamilton’s dog, Virgil.

Description

Virgil’s Plant Shop is a neighborhood houseplant retailer specializing in common and rare tropical and arid houseplants, alongside pots and plant-care goods.1 The brick-and-mortar shop sits at 2763 Cherry Street in the Longfellow neighborhood of Midtown Kansas City, Missouri.21 In summer 2024 the business expanded into the adjacent storefront at 2765 Cherry Street, opening a dedicated arid-plant room branded “Virgil’s Palm Springs: An Arid Plant Oasis.”34

The shop is named after owner Reba Hamilton’s dog, Virgil, whose photo hangs inside the store; the dog passed away in 2024 and the shop holds an annual celebration for his birthday.54

Ownership and history

Virgil’s Plant Shop is owned and founded by Reba Hamilton, a Kansas City native who returned home to KC in December 2018 — after living in Brooklyn, New York — to pursue opening a plant shop.5 She was inspired in part by a boutique plant shop she had visited in Beacon, New York.5

In April 2019, Hamilton purchased a mini school bus and, with a friend flown in from out of town, converted it over roughly two weeks into a deep-forest-green mobile plant shop — “the plant bus.” The bus held its grand opening in July 2019, operating as a mobile shop during warmer months.5 Houseplant demand surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, with Hamilton running deliveries across the city, which enabled her to save toward a permanent space.5 She moved into the brick-and-mortar location near 28th and Cherry (2763 Cherry St) in April 2021,52 and expanded into the neighboring unit in summer 2024 to mark the shop’s fifth anniversary.34
