Description

Viva Social Dance Studio is a Latin dance school at 5722 Nieman Rd in the downtown Shawnee / Nieman corridor of Johnson County, Kansas. It bills itself as the only dedicated Latin dance studio in the Kansas City area, and draws students from across the region — Kansas City, Topeka, Lawrence, and Columbia, Missouri.¹ The studio teaches a clear beginner-to-advanced ladder across Salsa (Levels 1–2), Bachata (Levels 1–3), Reggaeton (Levels 1–2), and Argentine Tango (Level 1), alongside Zumba, with prerequisites between levels.²

Classes run on a monthly four-week-cycle model — 1.5-hour group classes scheduled in cycles (e.g., a “June 4-Week Cycle”) rather than open-ended drop-ins.²³ Pricing is package-based: a 4-class package is $120 and an 8-class package (the studio’s “best offer”) is $155 per cycle, with a $20 new-student special advertised.³ Drop-in, private-lesson, and social-cover pricing are not published on the site.

Ownership and history

Viva is owned and led by Josh Hernandez, who has taught for nearly 20 years.¹ Hernandez was born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City (the Bronx), where he began dancing; his Kansas tie runs through Kansas State University, where he studied East Coast swing and ballroom dancing.¹⁶ He has trained across American Rhythm, International Latin, East and West Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, Salsa, Bachata, and Zouk, and built Viva into the area’s only dedicated Latin studio.¹

Viva Social Dance Studio opened at its current 5722 Nieman Rd location in 2017, when Hernandez relocated the studio from downtown Mission, KS into the former Nallia dance school space in downtown Shawnee. The studio retained Nallia’s original sprung dance floors and installed a sound system sourced from the Kansas City Swing Club.⁶ Hernandez kept the studio operating through the COVID-19 pandemic — crediting an influx of new students seeking social connection during isolation — rather than accepting an offer to wind it down, leaving Viva as one of the few surviving social-dance studios in Johnson County.⁶

Beyond the studio, Hernandez produces the annual Viva SBK Festival KC, a salsa/bachata/kizomba congress hosted under the Viva brand.⁵
