West Bottoms Plant Co. is a queer-owned plant store and creative community hub at 1501 W 12th St in the West Bottoms (12th Street Post building), founded in 2022 by Austin Mosier and Tristan Carlson — featuring 180+ local KC artists alongside the plant retail and hosting a range of community programming.

Description

West Bottoms Plant Co. is Austin Mosier and Tristan Carlson’s queer-owned plant store and creative hub at 1501 W 12th St in the West Bottoms — in the 12th Street Post building, one of the district’s anchor creative spaces. Founded in 2022, the shop sells plants alongside goods from more than 180 local KC artists (pottery, prints, handmade gifts), positioning itself explicitly as a platform for KC’s independent maker community rather than a pure plant retailer.

The West Bottoms location hosts community events, art programming, and what The Pitch KC described as a posture of “radical care” for both the queer community and the broader KC arts ecosystem. In April 2026, Mosier and Carlson expanded with a second location — Mass Street Plant Co. on Mass St in Lawrence, KS.

Tier classification

Tier 2. Austin Mosier and Tristan Carlson are deeply embedded KC independent operators with four years of community-investment track record in the West Bottoms and a consistent press presence. Owner KC-metro-native status; if either owner grew up in KC metro, Tier 1 consideration is warranted. Currently Tier 2: established queer-owned independent with demonstrated KC community commitment.
