Westside Storey is a Kansas City apparel-and-gifts shop on the Westside, founded in April 2013 by owner Chris Harrington, that champions local KC brands and is the home of the house-made Bellboy apparel line. Set in a 1920s building that once housed Stern’s Dry Goods at 17th and Summit, the two-floor store blends local tees, vintage Chiefs and KC sports gear, jewelry, and curated antiques, carrying the work of dozens of local Kansas City makers alongside its own Bellboy brand.123
Description
Westside Storey is a Kansas City retailer on the Westside that describes itself as “your spot for local KC tees and goods, vintage Chiefs and other accessories.”3 The shop occupies an original 1920s building at the corner of 17th and Summit that previously housed Stern’s Dry Goods (proprietor Victor Stern) in the 1920s–30s, and Westside Storey leans into that history as part of its identity.1 Across two floors the store sells local-made apparel (tees, sweatshirts, crops, bottoms), enamel pins, jewelry, hats, candles, kids’ clothing, and a deep selection of vintage Kansas City sports gear spanning the Chiefs, Royals, KC Current, and area colleges (KU, K-State, Mizzou).13
A defining feature of Westside Storey is its role as a marketplace for local makers: the shop carries dozens of Kansas City companies and artists — the store’s own about page describes hosting “over 50 local Kansas City companies and artist,” and it stocks well-known KC brands such as Charlie Hustle, Made in KC, Easy Tiger, Sandlot, and Stance.1 Owner Chris Harrington has framed the store as “a museum where you get to touch things and take home” items, mixing emerging-designer goods with curated antiques and KC ephemera (including a vintage buffalo head from the shuttered Savoy Grill and a tribute to Lee Jeans’ “Buddy Lee” mascot).2
Westside Storey is also the production home of Bellboy, the shop’s house apparel brand of Kansas City heritage tees and sweatshirts (KC pennant, fountain, and similar local-pride designs).24 Bellboy began at Westside Storey and has since grown into a standalone brand with its own storefront in Westwood, Kansas.45
Ownership and history
Westside Storey was founded in April 2013 by Chris Harrington, who owns and operates the shop and shapes its eclectic antique-and-design retail sensibility.26 Harrington’s design and antique passion drove the store’s hybrid model — combining local apparel and gifts with curated vintage goods — across the two floors of the historic 17th-and-Summit building.12
Out of Westside Storey, Harrington and the shop developed the Bellboy apparel line (established 2014), a Kansas City heritage-tee brand sold first as the shop’s house brand and later expanded into its own retail storefront at Woodside Village in Westwood, Kansas. The two businesses share ownership: Bellboy was started by the people behind Westside Storey, making them sibling enterprises under the same Harrington-led ownership.45 (See sibling page: bellboy-apparel.)
