Wild Flour Baking Co. is a bakery and coffee house in a circa-1900 butter-yellow house with lilac trim at 307 Main Street in downtown Parkville, open Wednesday through Sunday mornings since February 2025. Owner Megan Andersen, a self-taught baker and former McLain’s cake decorator, started the business as a custom-cake-and-cookie operation in her Riverside kitchen in 2022, bought and gutted the old house in 2024, and now runs it as a neighborhood morning stop — kolaches, cinnamon rolls, baked oatmeal, cake bites, drop cookies and flavored lattes — while the custom wedding cakes and decorated sugar cookies that built the business continue out of the back.

Description

The bakery occupies a small, 120-year-old house on Main Street in downtown Parkville, painted butter yellow with lilac trim.12 Inside, a pastry case and lit menu boards face the door; to the left is a sitting room with a couch, four-tops and stained glass, and further rooms — one with the original fireplace, one with the front bay window — plus a side porch and front-porch seating.32 MIKCexplore, visiting in spring 2025, called it “a cottage core coffee shop” and “quite a cozy, special place,” and praised a hot honey-lavender espresso from a rotating drink board.3

The daily case is built for a morning crowd: cinnamon rolls, kolaches, baked oatmeal, drop cookies, cake bites, oatmeal cream pies, muffins and coffee cake, with rotating dessert bars (s’mores, pumpkin, lemon), fruit tarts, cookie-cake slices and brownies appearing occasionally, and whole pans of brownies or coffee cake to go.4 The coffee bar’s named drinks include The Wild Flour Latte and Grandma’s Sugar Cookie Latte, plus hot and iced tea and fresh-squeezed lemonade in summer.45 Pre-made buttercream cakes are sometimes on hand for a quick “Happy Birthday.”4

The custom side remains the backbone. Andersen’s decorated sugar cookies — “customizable for any events,” down to pharmaceutical reps taking them to doctors’ offices — and wedding cakes are made to order with two weeks’ notice; the Square storefront prices round cakes in chocolate, vanilla bean, strawberry, coconut or lemon-blueberry with five buttercreams.267 The house doubles as an event room for showers and work gatherings, and Andersen runs cake- and cookie-decorating classes; in 2026 the shop has added children’s story-time mornings and a Wednesday teacher discount.65

Ownership and history

Megan Andersen grew up in the Kansas City area, the daughter of two teachers, and says she has been baking “since I was old enough to reach the counter and read recipes” — it began with a kids’ cookbook at six or seven, and by her teens she was cooking family dinners from recipes her mother left out.82 She baked through college and a career as an early-childhood educator, decorated cakes at McLain’s Bakery in Waldo as a side job, and then took a travel-agency job for regular hours when she and her husband started a family; her son Bennett was four in 2024.2 Her first wedding cake was a friend’s in 2012; she made three or four more for friends before her own in 2016, and from 2015 to 2022 baked nights and weekends around a full-time job.8

In summer 2022 she left the travel agency, formed Wild Flour Baking Co. LLC and launched a cottage bakery from her home in Riverside, building a clientele largely through Kansas City moms’ groups on Facebook.28 By 2024 it had outgrown the kitchen: “It is fun what I do, but I needed to make more money. So I had to abandon this dream and go back to a more corporate job, or take the leap of faith and expand into a bigger space.”2 She “gasped” at a listing for the yellow house at 307 Main — commercial since the 1990s — and bought it in May 2024, then spent the rest of the year on foundation work, plumbing, new electric, HVAC and roof repairs and a commercial kitchen. “It is more than a leap to me, it is like a giant skydive.”21 To CanvasRebel that November: “It has taken a lot of guts, especially in this economy, to buy a property and invest even more money into a full renovation.”8

Kansas City Magazine and IN Kansas City both announced the shop in the fall of 2024 with an expected year-end opening; it opened in February 2025.213 On Parkville: “You can go a couple of miles and feel like you are in the city, but this is a fun, relaxing, quaint little spot with a lot of walking traffic … I want my space to be a welcoming space for everyone to gather, to celebrate, to relax, whatever they want to do.”2
