Family-owned, Latinx-owned coffeehouse at 840 S 55th St in the Turner neighborhood of KCK (66106), opened in 2020 by Leah Hermida with her mother Debra Ybarra. Hermida stopped for coffee every day on her commute, found nothing in Turner, and told herself that if no one opened a coffee shop within a year she would — then did, in a storefront directly across from the Turner Recreation Center. Description

The Windmill KC is a small craft coffeehouse at 840 S 55th Street in Turner, a working-class, heavily Mexican-American community in far southwest Kansas City, Kansas. It sits in a historic storefront directly across from the Turner Recreation Center and focuses on handcrafted coffee, pastries, and a short scratch food menu, with a plant-filled patio.¹²

The shop pours Messenger Coffee (the Kansas City roaster) and rounds it out with lattes, matcha, and chai. Food leans local and homemade: avEGGado toast and Mamá’s fresh salsa through the week, with scratch-made chorizo burritos added on Fridays and Saturdays.¹²

Founder Leah Hermida opened The Windmill KC in 2020 with her mother, Debra Ybarra. Hermida worked locally and stopped for coffee every day, noticing Turner had nowhere to get it; she resolved that if no one opened a coffee shop within a year, she would — and opened in a storefront across from the Turner Recreation Center on South 55th Street. The business is family-owned and Latinx-owned, and the family’s mission and church work is woven into how they run it.³

The name comes from a windmill that is a fourth-generation relic saved from a family farm near Fort Worth, Texas.³
