Central High School (Kansas City)

Central High School is one of the oldest public high schools in Kansas City, Missouri. Established in 1867 as part of what is now Kansas City Public Schools, it educated several nationally notable figures — including baseball Hall of Famer Casey Stengel, science-fiction author Robert A. Heinlein, and actor William Powell — before relocating in 1912 to its longtime home in the city’s East Side.¹²

Central High School traces its origins to 1867, when it was established to serve the educational needs of Kansas City’s rapidly growing population, making it among the oldest high schools in the city.¹ The school was originally located in downtown Kansas City near 11th and Locust Street.¹

It operated as a downtown institution through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the period during which its best-known early alumni attended. The school remains an operating part of Kansas City Public Schools today.¹

The building(s)

In 1912, Central relocated from its downtown location to a new site on the city’s East Side, where it has remained.¹ The school’s current address is 3221 Indiana Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri.¹

The campus underwent a major reconstruction beginning in 1991, when the facility was rebuilt at a cost reported to exceed $32 million as part of a magnet-school initiative.¹ The rebuilt campus features a large field house, a Greek-style theater, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool with diving boards.¹

The name and architect of the original downtown building, and any National Register or local historic designation for the current building, are not established here.

Notable alumni (verified)

• Casey Stengel — Baseball Hall of Fame player and manager. Stengel was a standout multi-sport athlete at Central High, captaining the football team and pitching the baseball team to a Missouri state championship before signing his first professional contract with the Kansas City Blues and dropping out of his senior year.³⁴ See casey-stengel.
• Robert A. Heinlein — Science-fiction author often called the “dean of science fiction.” He attended Kansas City’s Central High School beginning in 1919 and graduated in 1924.⁵¹ See robert-heinlein.

Note: Walt Disney is frequently associated with Kansas City schooling but did not attend Central High. Disney graduated from Benton Grammar School in Kansas City in 1917 and then attended McKinley High School in Chicago; he is not asserted as a Central alumnus here.⁷

Significance to Kansas City

As one of Kansas City’s earliest public high schools, Central High School is a long-standing institution of the city’s public-education system, and the breadth of its notable graduates — a baseball icon, a foundational science-fiction writer, and a Hollywood star — reflects its place in the city’s cultural memory across multiple generations.¹²
