William Powell

William Powell (1892–1984) was an American film actor best known for his urbane, witty leading roles in the 1930s and 1940s — most famously as detective Nick Charles in the Thin Man series opposite Myrna Loy, and in My Man Godfrey (1936) and Life with Father (1947). Though born in Pittsburgh, Powell was raised in Kansas City, Missouri, where his family moved when he was a teenager and where he graduated from Central High School before leaving to study acting in New York.¹²

Biography

Birth + the move to Kansas City

Powell was born July 29, 1892, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Horatio Warren Powell, an accountant, and Nettie Manila (Brady) Powell.¹ In 1907, when Powell was about 15, the family relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, where he spent his formative teenage years.¹²

Kansas City upbringing (Central High School)

In Kansas City, Powell attended Central High School, where he was active in theater — landing a supporting role in a school production of Sheridan’s The Rivals — and also served as a school cheerleader.² He graduated from Central High around 1910–1911; sources vary on the exact year.²³ By his own account he was already determined to become an actor while in Kansas City. After briefly studying law at the University of Kansas, Powell left for New York and enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, departing around 1912 to work in vaudeville and stock theater.¹

A frequently cited local footnote: the Powells lived a few blocks from the family of Harlean Carpenter — the future actress Jean Harlow — though the two did not meet until both were established Hollywood actors. Powell’s later engagement to Harlow ended with her death in 1937.⁴¹

Hollywood career (The Thin Man, My Man Godfrey)

Powell made his film debut in 1922 as a supporting player in Sherlock Holmes alongside John Barrymore, and built his early reputation in silent and early-sound films, including as detective Philo Vance in The Canary Murder Case (1929).¹ His defining success came with The Thin Man (1934), in which he played the suave, martini-drinking detective Nick Charles opposite Myrna Loy as his wife Nora; the pairing spawned a six-film series and made Powell and Loy one of the most popular screen partnerships of the era.¹⁵ He earned Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for The Thin Man (1934), My Man Godfrey (1936) — in which he co-starred with his former wife Carole Lombard — and Life with Father (1947).¹⁵

Later life + legacy

Powell’s final film was Mister Roberts (1955), after which he retired to Palm Springs, California.¹ He was married three times: to Eileen Wilson (1915–1930), with whom he had a son; to actress Carole Lombard (1931–1933); and to actress Diana Lewis from 1940 until his death.¹ He died of pneumonia in Palm Springs on March 5, 1984, at age 91, and is buried at Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, California.¹ Powell has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.⁶

Significance to Kansas City

William Powell is among the most prominent figures of Hollywood’s studio era to have been raised in Kansas City. Though born elsewhere, he came of age in the city, attended a Kansas City public high school (Central High School), and credited his teenage years there as the period in which he committed to an acting career.¹² He is recognized as a Missouri figure by the Missouri Encyclopedia and is part of Central High School’s notable-alumni tradition — reportedly a classmate of baseball great Casey Stengel.²⁴
