The Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium is Kansas City’s municipal zoo, founded in 1909 in Swope Park and now developed across roughly 200 acres of the ~1,750-acre park. Run since 2002 as a public-private partnership by the nonprofit Friends of the Zoo, the AZA-accredited zoo is known for one of the larger Africa exhibits in the United States, plus Australia, Tropics, polar bears, and penguins. In 2023 it added the Sobela Ocean Aquarium, prompting the rebrand to “Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium.”

Founding and early history

The zoo opened in December 1909 in Swope Park — land made possible by Thomas Swope’s 1896 donation — after advocacy by figures such as Barron Fradenburg, who argued “Kansas City cannot be a metropolitan without a zoological garden.”12 It started small, with a collection that included four lions, three monkeys, and an assortment of native animals.1 The original 1909 fieldstone Animal House still stands and is now part of the Tropics exhibit.3

Size and management

The zoo occupies about 202 acres within Swope Park, the metro’s largest park.24 Since 2002 it has operated as a private nonprofit governed by the Friends of the Zoo (FOTZ) board under agreement with the Kansas City Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners, and it is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).12

A major redevelopment in the 1990s expanded the zoo from roughly 60 acres to its current footprint, anchored by the new Australia (1993) and Africa (1995) exhibits; the zoo has invested more than $85 million in capital projects since 2007.21

Major exhibits

  • Africa (opened 1995) — long noted as one of the largest African exhibits in the U.S.12
  • Australia (opened 1993).2
  • Tropics — primates and otters, housed partly in the original 1909 building.1
  • Polar Bear Passage — an ~$11 million habitat opened in 2010.2
  • Helzberg Penguin Plaza — opened October 2013.2
  • Stingray Bay and other seasonal/interactive areas.1

Sobela Ocean Aquarium (2023)

The Sobela Ocean Aquarium opened September 1, 2023 — a ~$77 million project ($45M from the Zoological District plus ~$32M in private donations) with 650,000 gallons of water, roughly 8,000 animals across ~200 species, and six themed zones across 34 exhibits. It was named for the grandchildren of benefactors Barnett and Shirley Helzberg, and “ten years in the making.”567 Its addition prompted the institution’s rebrand to “Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium.”5 (The aquarium is on the zoo grounds; there is no separate downtown “Kansas City Aquarium” under the zoo.)
